Four-in-10 Children Have Trouble Reading Basic Words

September 27, 2012

This is what happens when you overcrowd the curriculum, stop teaching phonics and word attack strategies and administer mindlessly boring drivel dressed as literature:

Figures published for the first time show that 42 per cent of pupils – almost 250,000 – fail to achieve the expected standard in reading after a year of school.

Data from the Department for Education – based on a new-style test sat this summer – revealed that boys are already slipping far behind girls in terms of their ability to accurately decode a list of 40 words.

White British boys from the poorest backgrounds officially performed worse than any group, other than those from gypsy and traveller families. Just 37 per cent of these children reached the standard expected of their age group.

The disclosure will raise concerns that some groups of children – particularly boys – are being failed in the early years.

It comes just a week after Sats results showed that more than 20,000 boys finished primary school this summer with the reading age of a seven-year-old or worse.

To win this battle we need to promote reading, not just teach it. This can only be done by replacing ‘take-home leveled readers’ with rich, engaging texts. It is essential that our students see the benefits of reading, grow an appreciation for words and word sounds and most of all, come to the conclusion that their teacher is passionate about reading too.

Dad’s Letter to 13-Year Old Son after Discovering he had been Downloading from Porn Sites

September 27, 2012

This letter proves getting angry isn’t the only way to deal with potentially difficult situations:

I want to start out by saying that I love ya and I’m not trying to embarrass you. Before you do anything else click the star in the upper right hand corner of internet explorer which is already pulled up and then click back on the icon to the right of the skype symbol in your toolbar to pull this page back up. —————————————> That history is the reason that you got that scamware and all the other crap on your computer. I want to tell you that it’s ok. Listen, I was 13 once too and it wasn’t so long ago that I don’t remember. I’m not mad or anything. It’s life and I did it too. I just want you to know that most of those sites are places that can and will ruin your computer. You were actually lucky that it only did what it did. There are viruses and other scamware that can completly ruin a computer and I can’t afford to buy you another 1800 dollar machine because you went to a site that fried it.

There are sites that are completely safe and you can go on them and not have your computer turned into a piece of junk. You can go to these sites and not screw up your computer. Don’t click on any links taking you to other sites and please only go to these. Ninty percent of porn sites have crap that can brick a computer …

Listen, I won’t tell your mom and I’m not gonna make a big deal out of this. In fact I’m not gonna make any size deal out of it. If you don’t wanna talk about it that’s fine and I completely understand. I’ve been on this earth three times as long as you and there’s nothing you have done or will do that I haven’t done before. If you want to completely ignore this ever happened then I can and will do that too. Please don’t act awkward around me because of this. You have nothing to be embarrassed about. I just can’t have an 1800 dollar machine turned into a brick because you haven’t learned where to go on the internet. I’m not going to put a child lock on your computer or punish you in any way because as I said you did nothing wrong. I would like you to not be back here so much though. You literally spend all of your time back here. I’d like to see you more often. I like doing stuff with you and miss it.

I love you and I couldn’t be more proud of you.

I am Destined to be Replaced by a Computer

September 27, 2012

If I am to be replaced by a computer I have the following requests to make of my replacement:

1. The computer must have a sense of humour: My students love to laugh. The computer should never take himself too seriously.

2. The computer must be tough on bullying: Bullying can destroy a child’s school life. The computer must crack down on that.

3, The computer must be patient: It is very important to remain calm and supportive without giving up on the students.

4. The students must be caring and command respect from the students: We have all had heartless teachers. They don’t work.

5. The computer must be aware of any self-esteem issues that may arise in the classroom: The computer must be perceptive.

As my days as a teacher seems to be numbered, I hope my replacement manages to stay true to my list:

Teachers will likely be replaced by humanised computers so advanced they can read and consciously respond to students’ voices, faces and interests within decades, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says.

The once-shy electronics whiz kid who formed the computing juggernaut with Steve Jobs in 1976 says the exponential growth of modern technology has changed his long-held belief that computers could never achieve humanoid intelligence.

“I just said no, that’s ridiculous, the brain works in totally different ways … it’s just not going to happen. Now I’ve come around, and I see that yes, it is going to happen,” Wozniak told a packed Melbourne Convention Centre on Wednesday.

School Allegedly Turned a Blind Eye to Peter Forrest’s Relationship with Schoolgirl

September 26, 2012

Let me start off by saying how surprised I am with the sympathy Peter Forrest is getting from readers. Not only did he cheat on his wife Emily, but he broke the number one commandment of teaching by behaving inappropriately with a student.  I am stunned that there are people who consider a relationship between a teacher and a student is healthy. I am equally stunned that they have no issue with the fact she is only 15. Would it be alright if she was 13, 10 or 5?

Now lets turn our attention to a school that seemingly refused to act when they had the chance. Bishop Bell C of E School allegedly allowed Peter Forrest to work for seven months after his relationship was brought to their attention. How can a school in today’s age be so inept?

The police were told as Bishop Bell C of E school in Eastbourne, the school Forrest taught at and Megan attended, also investigated their relationship.

Huge questions have been raised about how they dealt with the warnings after the Mail revealed they were warned seven months ago that something inappropriate was going on between the pair.

Students had seen them holding hands on a school trip to Los Angeles.

Headteacher Terry Boatwright has revealed that the school, the council, Megan’s parents and Sussex Police were working together when they went missing.

‘The school, in conjunction with the local authority, Megan’s parents, and the police had been addressing and investigating those concerns, in line with procedure, when this happened,’ he said.

The authorities involved are remaining silent on what exactly they were doing about the relationship.

The school, county council and police will not give details about their investigations, so it is not clear what action they were taking against Forrest or what Megan’s parents were told before they went on the run.

It has also been revealed that a child protection expert wrote to Education Secretary Michael Gove expressing concerns about the school’s protection policy.

Lucy Duckworth said they were ‘extremely hostile’ when she began asking questions about the issue but the school maintains it had a ‘robust’ safeguarding policy in place.

‘The policy does not commit to informing parents or the local authority of any suspected or known abuse. If there was a robust policy in place, the parents would be informed,’ she said.

‘What we found was there was a whole section on safe recruiting but very little on how to effectively protect children. I’m convinced that, had that policy been in place, the parents would have been able to make a decision on their prolonged contact and Megan would be with us.’

With a reaction as astoundingly pathetic as that, should we be surprised that this has happened before?

Parents at Megan Stammers’ school demanded an inquiry into its child protection procedures last night as more under-age sex scandals emerged at the Church of England comprehensive.

Incredibly, another teacher at Bishop Bell C of E School in Eastbourne was jailed three years ago for preying on teenage girls after grooming them on a social networking site.

In addition, a former chairman of governors at the same school is due to stand trial on alleged child sex offences next month. Some parents said their children were too scared to attend class after it was revealed how staff failed to remove married maths teacher Jeremy Forrest despite warnings that he was having a relationship with Megan seven months ago.

Robert Healy, a supply teacher at the school, was jailed in 2009 for sleeping with two girls aged 15 and 16 after grooming them on a social networking site. In a striking similarity to the Megan Stammers case, other pupils knew what was going on before he was caught.

The Cost of Living in a ‘Dropout Nation’

September 26, 2012

US network PBS filmed a story for their Frontline series entitled ‘Dropout Nation‘. It looked at the impact of rising school dropouts. They revealed the following findings:

$20,241

The average dropout can expect to earn an annual income of $20,241, according to the U.S. Census Bureau (PDF). That’s a full $10,386 less than the typical high school graduate, and $36,424 less than someone with a bachelor’s degree.

12

Of course, simply finding a job is also much more of a challenge for dropouts. While the national unemployment rate stood at 8.1 percent in August, joblessness among those without a high school degree measured 12 percent. Among college graduates, it was 4.1 percent.

30.8

The challenges hardly end there, particularly among young dropouts. Among those between the ages of 18 and 24, dropouts were more than twice as likely as college graduates to live in poverty according to the Department of Education. Dropouts experienced a poverty rate of 30.8 percent, while those with at least a bachelor’s degree had a poverty rate of 13.5 percent.

63

Among dropouts between the ages of 16 and 24, incarceration rates were a whopping 63 times higher than among college graduates, according to a study (PDF) by researchers at Northeastern University. To be sure, there is no direct link between prison and the decision to leave high school early. Rather, the data is further evidence that dropouts are exposed to many of the same socioeconomic forces that are often gateways to crime.

$292,000

The same study (PDF) found that as a result — when compared to the typical high school graduate — a dropout will end up costing taxpayers an average of $292,000 over a lifetime due to the price tag associated with incarceration and other factors such as how much less they pay in taxes.

The Rise of the Insensitive School

September 25, 2012

Who in their right mind would stop students from paying tribute to a the memory of a treasured friend and classmate?

Friends of a 14-year-old boy who died after a long battle with cancer are being sent home from school for refusing to remove wristbands worn in his memory.

Jordan Cobby, from Nuneaton, was diagnosed with a tumour behind his eye in 2008 and died aged 14 last March

Tribute wristbands in memory of Jordan were sold at his school, the Nuneaton Academy, following his death, with all proceeds donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust charity.

Friends of the teenager bought the bands and have worn them ever since, but now the school has banned pupils from wearing them, saying they are not part of the uniform, his mother Joanne Meuse said.

One pupil, a close friend of Jordan’s, has even been sent home for refusing to remove the wristband.

Make an Example out of Jeremy Forrest

September 25, 2012

Catch him, and if he is found guilty, throw the book at him. His jail sentence should be long enough to serve as a deterrent for the entire teaching community:

Police hunting for runaway teenager Megan Stammers have released an image of her boarding a ferry to Calais in a car driven by her married maths teacher.

The 15-year-old schoolgirl, who has not been seen since last week, was caught on camera in the passenger seat of a dark Ford Fiesta, as she caught a ferry to the Continent with Mr Forrest, 30, from Dover last Thursday.

This afternoon, as Megan’s anxious mother and step-father made an emotional appeal for her safe return, it emerged that the schoolgirl had been receiving after-school tuition from Mr Forrest prior to her disappearance.

She is said to have arrived in France with Forrest after it was disclosed she had sent a message to a friend, but police conducting a cross-Channel search fear the pair could have travelled further into Europe.

Estranged Danielle Wilson and Martin Stammers tearfully told a press conference of their shock that Megan fled the country in secret with Forrest – who had said online their forbidden love had ‘hit me like heroin’.

Detectives have admitted they do not know the pair’s current location, but today released the image of the teacher and pupil boarding a ferry last week.

World’s Smallest Girl Begins Her School Life

September 24, 2012

Good luck to young Charlotte Garside on her first day of primary school:

The world’s smallest girl Charlotte Garside took a massive step this month after starting her first day at primary school.

The five-year-old, who is just 68cm tall and weighs less than 9lbs, is no bigger than a newborn and smaller than her favourite teddy.

Last week, she joined kids her own age in the classroom for the first time.

The day marked a milestone for proud parents Scott Garside and Emma Newman who have battled to give their daughter as normal a life as possible.

Charlotte was born with a form of Primordial Dwarfism so rare doctors don’t even have a name for it.

But despite being warned she could die before the age of one, Charlotte has developed into a boisterous and inquisitive girl

Emma, 30, of Withernsea, East Yorks, said: ‘Although Charlotte is a one-in-a-million baby with some health problems, she is not the sort of person who will fade into the background.

Legalised Corporal Punishment = Legalised Physical Assault

September 24, 2012

How can corporal punishment be legal anywhere in the US? Even worse, how can it be administered for something as petty as sharing homework answers?

A Texas high school student opted to take a spanking rather than serve another day of in-school suspension, but she was left bruised and blistered after she was spanked by her male vice principal, who violated the school’s policy on corporal punishment, reports WFAA.

Taylor Santos, a high-achieving sophomore at Springtown High School, said she didn’t know that a classmate had copied her homework, but the school assigned both students to two days of in-school suspension. Taylor volunteered to take a paddling instead, to avoid missing any classes. Texas is one of the 19 states that still allows spanking in school, but it requires that parents give permission, which Santos’ mother, Anna Jorgensen agreed to.

But what they didn’t realize was that it would be the school’s male vice principal who would administer the spanking — violating the school’s rule that the teacher giving the paddling must be the same sex as the student.

“I knew school policy was females swatted females, and males swatted males. If Taylor wanted that, I said that would be fine,” Jorgenson told WFAA, adding that she was horrified when she saw the results of the spanking and learned of who did the swatting.

“It looked almost like it had been burned and blistered, it was so bad,” Jorgensen said of her daughter’s behind.

Jorgensen said she called the vice principal to complain, but he told her that it was perfectly normal for her daughter’s bottom to look like that after the spanking and he wasn’t aware of the school same-sex swatting policy.

Swatting? You swat a fly, not a person!

Let me ask you an obvious question – What would be the punishment for a parent that hit his child so hard she had burns and blisters on her bottom?

Educators should never be allowed to discipline a child in a way the child’s own parents would be prohibited from doing.

The Court System Should Deal Severely with Teachers Like This

September 24, 2012

I want the courts to be ruthless on teachers that misuse their position and have relationships with their students. How dare they take a position of trust and use it to lure impressionable children!

The devastated family of a schoolgirl who ran away to France with her married teacher yesterday pleaded with her to ‘come home safe’.

Megan Stammers, 15, boarded a Channel ferry with maths teacher Jeremy Forrest, 30, after he spent months grooming her on Twitter to escape on an ‘adventure’ with him.

As British and French police launched a hunt for the pair, Megan’s father  Martin Stammers last night told the Daily Mail: ‘It’s been hell. We have no idea where she is.

‘The whole family has been rallying together and we’ve been working closely with the police. We just want her home safe.’

Mr Stammers, who teaches at the sister school of Forrest’s, pleaded on his Facebook page: ‘Come home safe my beautiful daughter xx.’

His plea came as neighbours of Forrest claimed he was prone to aggressive outbursts during domestic disputes with his wife.
