The Dangerous New Craze Adopted by Kids (Video)

Parents in Rhode Island are being warned of a dangerous craze that involves middle-schoolers snorting Smarties.

According to officials in Portsmouth Middle School, the trend is a ‘widespread phenomenon’ that has been sweeping YouTube in recent years.

A search of the popular video-sharing site has revealed hundreds of clips where kids are seen crushing the beloved round candies into powder before sniffing them. 

The Smarties snorting trend is by no means a new phenomenon; some of the YouTube videos date back to at least 2007.

In one video posted in 2010, young boys are seen making lines of Smarties dust similar to cocaine and snorting the sugary powder through a rolled up dollar bill. 

The clip, which has drawn more than 12,000 views, shows the kids coughing and gasping for air as the residue fills their nasal passages and lungs.

Robbie Williams Offers to Take Drugs With His Daughter

This is one of many examples why most of our celebrities don’t deserve the right to be seen as legitimate rolemodels for our children:

BRITISH singer Robbie Williams would take drugs with his daughter if she ever wants “to go there”.

The 39-year-old singer and his wife Ayda Field welcomed Theodora Rose into the world in September last year.

Robbie famously battled drug addiction and alcoholism in the past, but has since become sober.

The star insists he’d dabble again if his daughter ever wanted to experiment.

“I doubt she’ll be like me. Touch wood, and follow that with a lot of love and a lot of luck, she won’t go there or have to go there,” he told Sunday Style magazine.

“If unfortunately that does happen, I’ll know what to do. Which is make sure she’s got the best drugs possible – and take them with her.”

Robbie has written a song for his young daughter, which was inspired by his substance abuse and the dark times he experienced as a result.

The former Take That star says the lyrics go into detail about his history.

“It goes, ‘Sit down, close the door I think it’s time you knew the score, why you feel weird.

“One day you’ll be told about, how Daddy let his demons out, yeah he makes them scream and shout. So what better when you’re old enough, and you’re out on your own and stuff, if you start losing hold of love it’s because…

“Your uncle sells drugs, your cousin is a cutter, your grandma is a fluffer, your grandad’s in the gutter, your mother is a nutter, you’re a mad motherf**ker.”

Robbie also revealed in the interview that his daughter is friends with Adele’s eight-month-old son Angelo.

“Her son and my daughter go on play dates. Little Peanut is on the list of potential suitors for Teddy,” he smiled.

Trick, Treat or Cocaine?

This is why I wrote a post on safety tips during Halloween:

A man has been charged with possession of class-A drugs after children out trick-or-treating for Halloween were given bags of cocaine.

Snap bags containing the white powder were handed to youngsters taking part in traditional Halloween fun in Royton, Greater Manchester, at around 7.50pm on Wednesday evening.

The bags were taken to police and examined and confirmed to contain cocaine.

Donald Junior Green, 23, has been charged with possession of class-A drugs and is due before Oldham magistrates’ court on Friday morning.

A 21-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of possession of class-A drugs and was later released without charge.

Superintendent Catherine Hankinson, of Greater Manchester police, said: “The parents and police acted quickly when this report was made, in the interests of public safety.

“We understand this to be an isolated incident.”

The Most Effective Anti-Smoking Ad Ever Conceived

Pure genius! Getting children to ask smokers for a light is a brilliant way to sell the anti-smoking message:

It has been labelled “heartbreaking” and one of the most effective anti-smoking advertisements ever.

The new public service announcement from Thailand shows two small children approaching adults who are smoking and asking them for a light.

Not one of the adults shown in the ad gives the children what they ask for.

Instead the adults — who have no idea they are being set up — begin giving the children earnest lectures on why smoking is so bad for them.

“If you smoke you die faster,” one man tells a little boy.

“Don’t you want to live and play?”

“When you smoke you suffer from lung cancer, emphysema and strokes,” another says.

The children then reveal their trump card, a brochure they hand the adults which reads: “You worry about me. But why not about yourself?”

The video, produced by the agency Ogilvy Thailand on behalf of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, was uploaded to YouTube a week ago and has since gone viral, attracting more than 350,000 views.

The foundation has reported a 40 percent increase in the number of calls it has received about how to stop smoking.

Middle-Class Children and Alcohol

Long thought to be a largely lower socio-economic problem, alcohol abuse seems very much alive and well among middle-class children. This presents a very gloomy picture for what the future has to offer.

More than one in three of those born in professional households had downed a full glass before reaching their teenage years, the statistics show.

The 35 per cent figure among the middle classes is almost twice the level found among 12-year-olds across all economic groups.

Experts said that most children who had drunk alcohol at such a young age were getting it from their own homes.

While some were secretly raiding well-stocked drinks cabinets, many more were being allowed to drink by parents who believed that it would help them to develop more mature attitudes towards alcohol.

The Ipsos Mori poll for charity Drinkaware, which is funded by the alcohol industry to promote sensible drinking, surveyed more than 500 parents from the social groups ABC1 and their children, aged between 10 and 17.

This also reminds us that we are not doing nearly enough to remedy the problem.

Student Finds a Bag of Cocaine in Her Amazon Textbook Order

Cocaine isn’t something you’d expect to find in your Amazon textbook order. For one unsuspecting customer, a university textbook about terrorism isn’t the only thing she received in the mail.

Any university student who has ever purchased a used textbook knows that there are sometimes strange surprises hiding between those pages. Usually they come in the form of messy scribbles or perhaps even a forgotten piece of gum, but in one student’s case the unexpected (and unwanted) gift-with-a-textbook-purchase was a bag of cocaine.

WPTV reports that Sophia Stockton — a junior at Mid-America Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas — recently ordered a textbook from an independent retailer through the Amazon online storefront. The book was intended for a spring course on terrorism and is called “Understanding Terrorism: Challenges, Perspectives and Issues.”

When Stockton flipped through the textbook, she “discovered a bag of white powder had fallen to the ground.” According to WPTV, Stockton feared that the bag contained anthrax and took it to the local police department the next day:

“I told them white powder was in my terrorism textbook and so I put it on the table and they’re like, ‘oh, okay,’ And so he went back and tested it,” Stockton recalls. “ He comes back and says, ‘you didn’t happen to order some cocaine with your textbook, did you?’ And I was like, no!”

This is certainly not the best method of getting disillusioned kids back into reading.

Study: Clever Children More Likely to End Up On Drugs

There have been a lot of studies recently where the findings were so obvious you wondered how they managed to get a research grant for it in the first place.But every so often you stumble upon a study where the findings were not as you might have predicted.

A recent study that found that clever children are more likely to use drugs surprised me greatly:

Intelligent girls and boys are much more likely than average to take illegal drugs like cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy when they grow up, a study has found.

Scientists think they do so in part as a “coping strategy” to avoid bullying from their peers, and partially because they find life boring.

The effect is more pronounced in girls than boys, with those exhibiting high IQs as children more than twice as likely to have tried cocaine or cannabis by the age of 30, as those of lower intelligence.

The effect in boys with high IQs is also marked, with them being around 50 per cent more likely to have done so by that age as their less intelligent former classmates.

A team at Cardiff University analysed data from almost 8,000 people born in one week in April 1970, who were enrolled at birth in the ongoing British Cohort Study, which follows participants through life. All these children had their IQs tested between the age of five and 10.

Drug use, as reported by the participants themselves, was then recorded at 16 and 30 years of age.

At 16, 7.0 per cent of boys and 6.3 per cent of girls had used cannabis. This minority had “statistically significant higher mean childhood IQ scores” than non-users, according to the authors of the report, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

The authors noted: “Across most drugs (except amphetamine in men), men and women who reported using in the past 12 months had a significantly higher childhood IQ score than those who reported no use.”

They concluded: “High childhood IQ may increase the risk of substance abuse in early adulthood.”

Well that explains it – no wonder why I’ve never taken drugs!
