What if she were a Man?

December 10, 2013

eppie

Barred from teaching for just two years for sexual activity with a 17 year old student? Are you serious? Surely, she should never be allowed to teach again. Lucky for her she isn’t a male teacher:

A teacher who was found half-naked in a layby with one of her teenage pupils has been struck off for two years.

Eppie Sprung Dawson, 27, was found ‘unfit to teach’ by a disciplinary hearing in Edinburgh yesterday.

She was not present at the hearing, but in a statement read to the General Teaching Council for Scotland panel, she agreed to being struck off and admitted having sex with Matthew Robinson last December, when he was 17 years old.

She said: ‘On the 9th of February I was convicted at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

‘I engaged in sexual intercourse with him; Contrary to Section 42 of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009.

‘I was sentenced on 18 September 2013 and sentenced to a Community Payback Order and made subject to the sex offenders register.

‘I readily and willingly consent to being removed and understand that I will be prohibited from teaching for a period of two years.’

You Can’t Foster Tolerance With Racist Teachers

October 30, 2013

racist

Facebook has obviously provided teachers with with the ability to connect with students and colleagues in a way they have never before. It has also exposed some teachers as being completely unfit for their chosen profession.

Case in point:

A High school teacher in the United States has sparked a racism row after ranting about black children on Facebook.

David Spondike, a 51-year-old teacher at Firestone High School in the state of Ohio, logged onto the social networking site and unleashed a diatribe against kids from the “ghetto” who had caused trouble trick-or-treating outside his house, Akron News Now reported.

The post was soon deleted, but someone sent screenshots to several local news outlets. Mr Spondike was apparently upset about one of the kids exposing himself and urinating in front of his home.

“I don’t mind if you come to my neighbourhood from the ghetto to trick-or-treat,” Mr Spondike said.

“But when you whip our your teeny d***s and piss on the telephone pole in front of my yard and a bunch of preschoolers and toddlers, you can take your n****r-a** back where it came from. I don’t have anything against anyone of any colour, but n*****s, stay out!” he said.

There are many things wrong with this post, not least of which is the inconsistency of saying you have nothing against people of any colour in the same sentence as a demeaning racial slur.

Facing an almighty backlash, Mr Spondike removed the post and said he was sorry “to those who are sincerely offended”.

However, in a series of additional posts, he didn’t apologise for using the N-word. Mr Spondike said he hears “that n****r word more than 25 times a day in a public school, where it is used thousands of times every day by black people”.

“Racism is racism and to allow one race to use a word and not another IS racist. What I said was absolutely NOT racist by any stretch of the imagination,” Mr Spondike said.

“When I try to get the teenagers in my school to stop using the word n****r, I only get laughed at.”

Mr Spondike will reportedly remain on leave while his school district investigates the incident.

The district released a statement regarding the online spat, condemning the conduct of its teacher.

“His comments were unprofessional and unbecoming a teacher,” said Superintendent David W James. “Regardless of whether he was on his own time and own account doing this, he is a teacher, and his actions influence children. This is serious.”

According to Mr Spondike’s personnel file, his record was already less than spotless. In 2007 he was accused of choking a student, though the claim was never substantiated, and in 2000 he was reprimanded for throwing a chair across his classroom.

Having said that, Mr Spondike also received “glowing evaluations” for his teaching.

A very poor defense by Mr. Spondike and an equally poor response by the Superintendent. A teacher should not be judged on their teaching skills alone, but also by their ability to act as a role model.  Mr. Spondike claims he is not a racist. He hasn’t quite convinced me yet.

Brawl Between Student and Teacher Goes Viral (Video)

November 22, 2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRSjrw6gbEU

Teachers do not have the right to get physical with their students no matter how bullied, humiliated or intimidated they are made to feel. I can understand what this teacher was thinking and I sympathise with the position he was put in, but his actions were simply not acceptable. If only teachers were treated with greater respect from the wider community, then students would get a more positive insight into what we do and why we do it. This kind of attitude comes about from a growing lack of respect for teachers from the wider community.

Video of a student punching and attacking a substitute teacher at Palm Beach Lakes High School in Florida is going viral, and school officials are investigating the filmed incident.

WPTV reports that the footage was posted to Facebook with the caption, “BoI only at Palm Beach Lakes smh…” World Star Hip Hop has since picked up the video, drawing more than 841,000 views as of early Tuesday afternoon.

The video begins with an unnamed student and the substitute teacher — identified by students as Mr. Smith or “Smitty” — standing face-to-face in an argument. The student then shoves the teacher and punches him. The teacher tackles the student, chasing him until the teen runs out of the room. It’s unclear what the brawl was about, but students interviewed by WPTV spoke highly of the teacher and said students should show respect for him.

“A teacher should, you know, stand up for himself, but not to go on ahead and you know,” Palm Beach Lakes High senior Darrel Phillips told the station. “I’m speechless right now.”

School officials declined comment on an open case, but say that the substitute teacher has been fired and the student was expelled.

The Most Sickening Abuse I Have Ever Seen a Teacher Commit

October 24, 2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmB-g25RpUI

Teachers should never, ever hit their students. The fact that corporal punishment is legal in certain states in America is shameful. What’s even worse is when the child gets hit for nothing more than getting a wrong answer. The video I have linked is truly gruesome. Poor, young, maths students are repeatedly hit for what simply not showing an understanding of the skill conveyed:

A teacher at the Sky Montessori kindergarten in north China’s Shanxi Province has been detained following the release of what appears to be surveillance video of her repeatedly hitting her students.

Officials first clued into the behavior when a father of one of the students said his daughter came home with bruises and swollen eyelids.

“I picked up my kid at 5:10 p.m. and when we got home I noticed that her eyes were swollen with two welts, it was swollen here [pointing to one cheek] and bruised black and green here,” said the father who first reported the abuse.

“Between 4 and 4:30, my daughter was hit 70 times, slapped about 70 times on the face, and kicked in the butt twice. That’s for my child. Another was hit 40-some times, 43 times. Another one was hit 10 times, and another 27 times.”

In a surveillance camera video distributed by LiveLeak, the teacher, identified as Li Zhuqing, appears to hit multiple children many times in a 10-minute period, even going so far as to grab one pupil by the arm, then try to throw him to the ground.

The children were allegedly punished for being slow at arithmetic.

“The teacher did it because she couldn’t answer correctly 10 plus one,” continued the man whose daughter had been abused.

“But she could do single digit addition. Because of this, she couldn’t get it right the first time, so the teacher taught her. But then my daughter said, ‘Ms. Liu, I still don’t know.’ She still didn’t know so the teacher picked up a booklet and went at her face.”

How dare this teacher hit these poor, defenseless children. If found guilty she must be given a prison sentence.

Student Takes the Fall for Teacher’s Incompetence

October 19, 2012

This sounds extremely harsh to me:

Students from an Indiana middle school have been suspended after viewing a nearly nude photo of their teacher on a school-issued iPad that had synched with the woman’s iPhone.

Joshua Troutt, 13, and three other Highland Middle School students from Anderson, Ind., have been suspended after seeing a topless photo of their teacher, according to Fox 59.

“It just showed up of our teacher with a bra on, but most of her breast showing,” Troutt explained to Fox 59. “I never thought of seeing my teacher like that.”

The topless photo appeared on the iPad because the teacher’s iPhone reportedly synched to the tablet. “We couldn’t do anything not to look at it, if it just popped up when he pressed the button,” Troutt told RTV 6. “It was her fault that she had the photo on there. Her iPhone synched to it. She had to have pressed something to make all of her photos synch on there.”

Detective Joel Sandefur said that “since the material was not pornographic in nature and no other criminal violation could be gleaned from the evidence as presented, the matter was turned over to the school and the police investigation closed,” according to RTV 6.

Troutt claims that he and the other students asked for permission to use the school-issued iPad.

Assistant Superintendent Beth Clark said that the Indiana school has a handbook with guidelines on how to use school technology, and those guidelines were followed, KSDK reports. However, Troutt and the other students were suspended and face expulsion for seeing the nude photo.

The boy’s mother, Nicole, said she thinks the repercussions are “very unfair” and alleges her son “never even touched [the iPad].”

The Court System Should Deal Severely with Teachers Like This

September 24, 2012

I want the courts to be ruthless on teachers that misuse their position and have relationships with their students. How dare they take a position of trust and use it to lure impressionable children!

The devastated family of a schoolgirl who ran away to France with her married teacher yesterday pleaded with her to ‘come home safe’.

Megan Stammers, 15, boarded a Channel ferry with maths teacher Jeremy Forrest, 30, after he spent months grooming her on Twitter to escape on an ‘adventure’ with him.

As British and French police launched a hunt for the pair, Megan’s father  Martin Stammers last night told the Daily Mail: ‘It’s been hell. We have no idea where she is.

‘The whole family has been rallying together and we’ve been working closely with the police. We just want her home safe.’

Mr Stammers, who teaches at the sister school of Forrest’s, pleaded on his Facebook page: ‘Come home safe my beautiful daughter xx.’

His plea came as neighbours of Forrest claimed he was prone to aggressive outbursts during domestic disputes with his wife.

The Rise of Teacher Approved Bullying (Video)

August 31, 2012

When a teacher decides to be circus ringmaster to a bullying free for all, one wonders how the authorities can do anything less than ban him from the classroom indefinitely.

Instead, they point out his record. This is his first blemish.

I would argue that this is not a blemish – it’s a gaping scar.

The parents of a Washington state teen want their son’s teacher fired after learning that the student was terrorized in a bullying attack by peers — and at some points, by the teacher.

The incidents occurred in February at Gig Harbor Middle School, but cell phone video of the attacks surfaced just this week. Footage shows more than a dozen students dragging the then-eighth-grade boy around the classroom, carrying him by his arms and legs, burying him under chairs, writing on his feet and stuffing his socks in his mouth. The antics last about 15 minutes while teacher John Rosi watches, and later joins in.

Rosi pokes the teen in the stomach and pretends to sit on him, chiding, “I’m feeling kind of gassy.” The class Rosi was supposed to be teaching is a half-hour course for reading and math preparation, The News Tribune reports.

After district officials learned of the incident in February, Rosi was suspended for 10 days without pay, given new classroom management training and moved to a different middle school.

But that’s not enough for the boy’s parents, Randall and Karla Kinney, who have requested a criminal investigation and are calling for Rosi’s termination. Joan Mell is representing the victim, who was 13 at the time of the incident.

It was a teacher-led bullying incident of epic proportions,” Mell told KIRO 7.

Acting Superintendent Chuck Cuzzetto said he was horrified by what he saw in the video, but contends that while Rosi displayed “inappropriate classroom management,” it was an isolated incident in an 18-year career, and the district acted appropriately in disciplining Rosi.

“We took what we think is pretty significant disciplinary action against the teacher,” Cuzzetto told the station.

Saggy Pants Leads to a Very Sticky Situation

August 3, 2012

Teachers are losing their cool, and while it’s inexcusable, it comes from the lack of respect our teachers are treated with:

Pat Frost, an English as a second language teacher for Anson High School in North Carolina, may lose her job after admitting to slapping a student during a dispute over saggy pants.

Frost was suspended after the incident occurred in June, and the district is still investigating the charges. At the time, she reportedly stopped 18-year-old Johnathan Smith to tell him to pull up his sagging pants. But Smith didn’t comply, allegedly telling the teacher to “get the [expletive] out of his way” and shoved past her, WBTV reports.

When Frost followed him outside, reportedly to record his name, the teen began to charge at her, yelling that he would “[expletive] her up.”

Smith told WSOC-TV, however, that he did pick up his pants and told the teacher his name — but Frost didn’t believe him.

“I never thought a teacher would lay her hands on me,” Smith told the station.

Frost’s attorney argues that Smith refused to give his real name and repeatedly threatened to assault her. Frost says her blow was out of self defense.

“Fearing she was about to be hit, Pat tried to create distance with the student and slapped him in the face in that effort,” according to a letter from Frost’s attorney. “He responded by striking Pat in the head. He then took off his shirt and started pounding on nearby cars in the parking lot yelling that he was going to get her fired and hoped that she would be killed.”

I am afraid that episodes like this will become extremely frequent if something isn’t done to improve teacher/student relations.

Labelling Children is Extremely Harmful

July 27, 2012

We have all cheated on something in our lifetime. I’m not endorsing cheating by any means, but we have all done it.

A child who is found to be cheating should be confronted, but not in front of the class and should definitely not have to put up with unnecessary and unhelpful labels and be subjected to gruesome corporal type punishment:

Unable to bear the trauma of being labeled a ‘cheat’ and unable to bear the taunts of her teachers, an 11-year-old girl jumped to her death from the roof of the five-storied apartment building of in which her school. The incident took place is located in Howrah’s Bijoy Kumar Mukherjee Road on Thursday morning. The incident highlights the poor state of affairs in educational institutions across the state. In spite of a blanket ban on corporal punishment, students are regularly falling victim to high-handedness of teachers. This is, however, the first time in recent years that a child has been driven to suicide by those she is supposed to trust and respect.

The principal of the school and the concerned teacher were detained following a complaint from the girl’s father Shiv Narayan Mishra. He claimed that principal Dilip Kumar Dubey gave his daughter a tongue-lashing, telling her to ‘go to hell’ and remain uneducated for the rest of her life. This may have led the Class-VI girl to suicide. While the school operates from the first floor of the building, the other floors have residential flats which had given the kid access to the roof.

Sick Teachers Need to be Arrested not Fired!

It’s just not sufficient to fire a teacher who is acting inappropriately towards their students. Often these teachers pop up in another school, sometimes another country, and continue to offend.

A teacher that encourages a student to stuff a pie down his pants shouldn’t just be banned from the classroom, he should be banned from society:

A teacher who asked a female pupil to stuff a pie down his pants has been struck off the teaching register.

Gavin Bradford was said to have made improper suggestions of a sexual nature to 20 girls at a college in Canada.

He was said to have asked them to smear themselves in ketchup and eggs and pour sour milk into their underwear.

Bradford, 37, returned home to Glasgow after the Canadian scandal and got a job as a performing arts lecturer at Coatbridge College in January 2010.

He has now been judged “unfit to teach” by the General Teaching Council Scotland.

Bradford did not turn up at the hearing in Edinburgh.

His removal from the teaching register in Scotland comes after the Ontario authorities tipped off their Scottish counterparts about his behaviour.

The exchanges happened over the internet late at night when Bradford was teaching in Canada.

He asked more than 20 girls as young as 12 to switch on their webcams during online conversations so he could watch them.

Struck off the register? If found guilty, he should be locked away for a long time and put on a sex offenders list!
