What if she were a Man?

Barred from teaching for just two years for sexual activity with a 17 year old student? Are you serious? Surely, she should never be allowed to teach again. Lucky for her she isn’t a male teacher:

A teacher who was found half-naked in a layby with one of her teenage pupils has been struck off for two years.

Eppie Sprung Dawson, 27, was found ‘unfit to teach’ by a disciplinary hearing in Edinburgh yesterday.

She was not present at the hearing, but in a statement read to the General Teaching Council for Scotland panel, she agreed to being struck off and admitted having sex with Matthew Robinson last December, when he was 17 years old.

She said: ‘On the 9th of February I was convicted at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

‘I engaged in sexual intercourse with him; Contrary to Section 42 of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009.

‘I was sentenced on 18 September 2013 and sentenced to a Community Payback Order and made subject to the sex offenders register.

‘I readily and willingly consent to being removed and understand that I will be prohibited from teaching for a period of two years.’

A Teacher Who Beds their Teenage Student Should be Jailed

Here’s a pointer: A teacher should never be intimate with their students. Additionally, a child who can’t clean his own room without creating a stir and running away from home is probably not going to last long in any serious relationship:

A teacher put on the sex offenders’ register over an affair with a 17-year-old pupil is now living with him in her home.

Eppie Sprung Dawson, 27, lost her job and her marriage ended after police found her half-naked with Matthew Robinson in her car after a Christmas school dance.

In July she pleaded guilty to sexual activity with the lad while in a position of trust and narrowly escaped jail.

But last week she moved Matthew, now 18, into her house after he left home over a row about tidying his room.

His mum Sheree said: “He rang Eppie to pick him up. We don’t know what she’s after.”

Sprung Dawson was sacked by St Joseph’s College in Dumfries and split from teacher husband Ranald.

She is serving a community order and undergoing counselling after telling the town’s court she was attacked by an older man at 13.

She was unavailable for comment at her home yesterday.

Sexism in Teaching?

June 6, 2013

English teacher Eppie Sprung Dawson has been told she won't face prison after she was caught having sex with a pupil

The message must be sent to the judicial system that teachers should pay the ultimate price if they are found to have been sexually active with their students, regardless of whether they are male or female.

Whilst I have no evidence to suggest that the reason a female teacher was spared jail for engaging in a sexual relationship with her student partly because she was a woman, I ask the following question – Can you see a male teacher spared jail due to the excuse of being abused as a teenager? Somehow I don’t think so.

A teacher who admitted having sex with a pupil had been abused when she was a teenager, a court heard yesterday.

Eppie Sprung Dawson, 27, was targeted when she was aged between 13 and 18 by a man 29 years her senior, a sheriff was told.

Yesterday, Dawson was told she would escape a custodial sentence after earlier admitting having sex with the 17-year-old boy in the front seat of her car last December.

She will have to return to court to learn her fate next month, but a sheriff told her she had breached a position of trust, although she had not abused anyone.

Sheriff George Jamieson added: ‘You were there simply to teach but you have been called into temptation and you have committed adultery – your marriage is gone, and your career as a teacher is gone.

‘What you have been charged with is breach of trust, and I cannot see that there is anything to be gained by a custodial sentence.

‘Had it not been for the fact that you were this young man’s teacher, there would have been no criminality.’

I just don’t understand that last sentence. Isn’t the fact that she was his teacher a clear ‘game changer’. So what if she wouldn’t have broken a law had she not been his teacher – she was his teacher!  And the notion that she has been punished already due to the breakup of her marriage and the demise of her career is laughable. I have no sympathy for both losses because a person that cheats on their partner and abuses their position has shown through their actions that they didn’t value either.

And back to my central argument. If it was a male teacher, would he be given the same latitude?
