Why is it Always the Kids’ Fault?

The UK’s Educational Secretary, Tristram Hunt, has called for schoolchildren to be given ‘concentration lessons’, to fight the effects of social media and digital gadgets.

You know what this makes me want to do?

Confiscate Mr. Hunt’s phone for the day. See how he copes without his “digital gadget”.

I bet he feels naked without his “distractions.”

And it’s this rank hypocrisy that is endemic among educational ‘experts’. Here are a few examples of the prevailing double standards I am referring to:

1. They call on teachers to instruct children to become more resilient when studies show that children are far more resilient than adults.

2. They legislate against lunches that c0ntain cheese and yogurt and crisps when the average staff room often contains cakes and biscuits and lollies.

3. They become obsessed with ICT to the point where schools are expected to heavily integrate iPads and interactive Smartboards apps, but then complain that such technologies are causing our children to lose concentration.

Why do we always focus on a child’s lack of concentration and never on a teachers ability to engage? Why is it always that children have lost the capacity to maintain concentration and never that the teacher has offered up a turgid series of worksheets and unimaginative activities?

If you think the children of today are that much worse than you or I when it comes to concentration, attend a professional development seminar and observe all the bored teachers scribbling on their handouts and staring out the window.

And yes, watch as many of them will reach for their digital gadgets at some point during the lecture to catch up with any Facebook updates they may have missed.

Pure hypocrisy!

The late great Dale Carnegie wrote:

There is only one way under high heaven to get anybody to do anything … Yes, just one way. And that is by making the other person want to do it.

It’s a shame that policy makers and school administrators don’t seem to have read any of Carnegie’s work because had they absorbed the quote above, perhaps they may have come up with something better to offer students.

People think that school represents the perfect place to undo parenting errors. They think that by bringing in a new school rule or program, that children will be set for life. Some of the rules and regulations in a school near you include:

– Anti-bullying programs

– Sex Ed programs

– Junk Food policies

– Playground no hugging rules

– Toilet rules

– Drug programs

– Anti-gambling programs.

 

And it goes on and on ….

 

Is this really a bad thing? What’s wrong with scrapping junk food from school?

Of course nothing is wrong with instilling healthy eating habits, teaching children about what constitutes bullying and how important it is to avoid drugs.  But to be successful you’re going to need more than a worthy cause.

The problem with schools taking on these issues is that schools already have a stigma for most children. Whether we like to admit it or not, most kids hate school and they hate what they are taught at school. So whether it’s a math or science lesson or its a discussion about the dangers or excess sugar consumption, the chances of breaking through are difficult. It requires a positive and creative approach.

And let’s face it, the programs eluded to above often look and feel like schoolwork. They often consist of worksheets and paired activities and feature mini-quizzes. Why do the people who put together these programs think that if they put an animal mascot on the front of the pack and crossword on page five that kids will warm to the content? No child has ever been fooled by such a gimmick.

And inflexible rules are worse. Sure, it’s not ideal for kids to be eating chips or popcorn at school, but taking away their treats is yet another way of reinforcing the stigma that schools are overbearing, ruthless and prison like. I just read that Brussels want to ban yogurts and cheese from school lunches. If I was a school kid in Brussels I would want to go home and douse myself in cheese just out of spite!

It is such a breath of fresh air when a great anti-bullying initiative or healthy eating idea surfaces. One that captures the students’ imagination and encourages rather than bans, nurtures rather than smothers.

If you want children to listen they must want to listen. Don’t shove draconian rules and anti-bullying packs down their throats. Give them something that doesn’t look or feel like school work.

Teachers Need to Have High Expectations for all of Their Students

It doesn’t matter if you have been warned about a student during a handover meeting or are aware of their reputation for misbehavior or lack of performance, your job as a teacher is to give that child the opportunity to start afresh.

Every child should see the beginning of a new school year as an opportunity to improve.  Some students only need to consolidate while others may need to make amends for recent poor habits.

As teachers we should have high expectations for all our students. If we set the bar low then there is no way the student can achieve to their potential. That does not mean we expect straights A’s for all, but rather, that each student works at their maximum and achieves to the best of their ability.

To read that some teachers modify their expectations due to superficial details like the spelling of a child’s name is both disappointing and quite preposterous:

Children who have unusual or oddly spelt names tend to fare worse in the classroom, academics have claimed. 

Teachers may subconsciously lower their expectations for pupils with names such as Destiny, Kayleegh and Chantal.

Alternatively, they tend to predict higher grades from students with traditional names – like Catherine or William.

This may suggest that teachers draw conclusions about pupils’ backgrounds on the basis of their names, according to The Times Educational Supplement (TES).

Meanwhile, what a child is called could also reflect their parents’ backgrounds and achievements. 

James Bruning, Professor of Psychology at Ohio University in America, told the supplement: ‘Clearly all of us use stereotypes about all sorts of things, and names are one of those things.

‘It is a first impression. If you only have a name as a guide then of course you make assumptions based on that.’

Mr Bruning said that if people were asked which of two students – Wa Wei Lee and Kahine Jefferson – was more likely to better at mathematics, most would opt for the Chinese pupil.

This decision would likely be based on an assumption that children of South-East Asian heritage are better with numbers, he said.

It comes as a study of two million children in Florida found that youngsters with traditional names were more likely to achieve higher grades in their end-of-year tests.

Father Teaches Young Sons a ‘Safe’ Way to Drive Dangerously (Video)

I am all for father bonding time but teaching your underage children how to drive recklessly is not a good idea:

A REV-HEAD father who allows­ his seven and 12-year-old sons to hoon in a car says it is less dangerous than taking his kids fishing or hunting.

Victoria Police has blasted the Melton dad as “irresponsible and reckless” after the exploits were posted on the internet.

A defiant Sam Surace said he allowed his sons to drive cars by themselves on private property and to do burnouts.

“This is not bad parenting. It’s just a bit of fun,” he said.

“At least we are keeping it off the street.”

A video posted on ­YouTube shows Mr Surace’s son Brandon, 12, sitting in a car at his parents’ home’s driveway, smoking up the tyres until smoke blackens out the footage.

The video shows other males pushing the front bonnet down for more smoke.

Just moments earlier Brandon’s brother, Joshua, 7, also smoked up the tyres in the same car.

Why I Won’t Be Celebrating Facebook’s 10th Anniversary

Facebook has proven not only an extraordinarily popular success but also an enduring one. In the ten years the social medium has been in circulation Facebook have become only stronger rather than a passing fad that one could be forgiven for assuming they would be.

But for all the good that Facebook offers, let’s not forget about the negative aspects.

1. Cyberbullying – Facebook has become the place for cyberbullies to insult and intimidate their victims. Even though Facebook claims to be vigilant when it comes to bullying, time and time again we have seen evidence to the contrary.

2. Privacy and Stalking – Unfortunately,  we constantly warn children about using the privacy settings because there are sick people out there who can potentially exploit them through their Facebook page. Nothing is private anymore.

3. Self-Esteem – Studies have shown that Facebook makes people feel worse about themselves.

4. Trivialising the concept of “Friends” – The meaning of the word “friend” has been greatly devalued thanks to Facebook.

5. Too Easy for Young Kids to Access – It might say you have to be 13 but a startling number of under aged children have their own Facebook page.

Is Tiger Mom a Racist?

Whether Amy Chua dubbed the “Tiger Mom” is a racist is not the point. Rather we should be talking about how skewed her thinking is.

Ms. Chua continues to measure success by academic scores, college degrees and careers. This is a very dangerous opinion because it says to all those with only decent grades and moderate salaries that they are not successful. Perhaps even that they are failures.

This is of course rubbish!

We should not be defined by our test scores or our take home pay but on what caliber person we are. Are we happy, generous and selfless? Do we possess integrity and do we try our best? Do we make time for family and friends?

Instead of listing cultures and religions that she thinks achieves what is an unrealistic and superficial version of success, she should be trying to pitch a positive message to her readers. Not everyone can be a Mormon or an Asian or Nigerian. But everyone can contribute to the world in a profoundly positive way. Forget trying to emulate cultures and religions, and instead, try to be your best self!

If we follow the Tiger Mom’s model for success we start to label. We look down at cashiers, house painters, taxi drivers and hairdressers.  We start putting more pressure on our kids to get into prominent colleges rather than concentrating on influencing them to be kind and give charity. In short, we become snobs!

Is Tiger Mom a racist? Personally, I don’t care.

One thing I do suspect though – I suspect she isn’t the success she thinks she is.

Student Shot by Teacher Protests His Sacking

I might be crazy, but I have a lot more time for a teacher that thinks big and gets it horribly wrong than one who turns to textbooks and worksheets for inspiration. Bringing a pellet gun to school in the name of physics is an accident waiting to happen, and you can understand why the authorities didn’t appreciate its appearance (nor the subsequent accidental shooting of a student). But, boy that could have been a brilliant lesson!

I commend the student for forgiving his teacher and for flying the flag for a teacher that made a terrible mistake in the name of engaging his class:

A high school senior in the UK who was injured by his physics teacher in an experiment mishap has launched a campaign to have the man reinstated after he was sacked.

Richard West was suspended then sacked when a pellet he fired in a physics experiment rebounded off a chair and struck one of his students in the leg.

But victim Ben Barlow has since set up a Facebook fan page and an online petition for his favourite teacher to get his job back, writing “You’d do more damage with a safety pin”.

“Mr West set up an experiment where he was going to shoot through paper into cardboard boxes at the end of the room to work out the speed of the object and its deceleration,” the 17-year-old student wrote.

The incident occurred in November but last week Mr West lost his job.

Now the “Bring Back Westy” fan page is approaching 3000 likes and dozens of students leaving comments of praise and calling for their teacher’s return.

School principal Adrian Richards told the UK’s Metro it would be inappropriate to comment on the matter as it was “still in the appeal phase of the process”.

The Education Version of Groundhog Day (Updated)

In the classic 1993 Bill Murray film Groundhog Day, Murray was forced to relive the same day over and over again until he learned from his mistakes.  Whilst only a light-hearted comedy on the surface, Groundhog Day was a timely reminder that mistakes and its consequences are repeated over and over again until they are learned from.

Every time the curriculum changes I think of Groundhog Day.  I’ve only been a teacher for a short time, yet already I have seen the curriculum change 4 times.  First it was the CSF, then it became the CSF 2, followed soon after by VELS. And the curriculum has recently been changed yet again!

And this time it’s a National Curriculum – and it stinks!

Why do they do it to us?  Just when you get used to one curriculum, they change it from another.

The cynic in me says the Government is bereft of ideas.  They know that education outcomes are underwhelming, that there isn’t much satisfaction in the quality of schools and performance indicators are not painting a rosy picture.  Yet, they don’t have a clue what to do about it.  They neither have the money, vision or gumption to make any real change, so they go for the obvious alternative – perceived change.

When asked to reflect on their achievements in Education, the former Government proudly pointed to overhauling the curriculum.  They triumphantly declared that by introducing a national curriculum, they were able to do what previous administrations couldn’t.

But they will know the truth all along – you can’t change the fortunes of an ailing academic record by altering and renaming a curriculum.  In fact, from my experience you can’t expect any change at all. Unless it is change for the negative.

Even if my cynical take is wrong, and there is some good intention behind this new curriculum, it doesn’t seem to be adding anything of substance.  A bit more grammar, a deeper focus on handwriting and a greater emphasis on history sounds good.  But when it comes down to it, it is just like my boss said both this time and last time and the time before that, “Don’t worry. It is going to be very similar to our current curriculum.”

The same mistakes over and over again …

6 Year Old Suspended for 4 Days Because of Cheese in his Lunchbox

Lunchbox laws cause friction between schools and parents and achieve a great deal less than intended. I am all for healthy eating, but the answer is not to suspend a 6 year old for what is in his lunchbox.

Ultimately, as much as educators want to feel they can change the world in all instances, the job of parenting should rest solely with … parents. It is not the business for schools to suspend children for cheddar cheese bags.

There are far better methods for dealing with unhealthy lunches than dictatorial rules. These include:

1. Having a quiet word to parent offenders.

2. Complimenting children with healthy lunches.

3. Having a fruit and vegetable party in the classroom to celebrate a class achievement. This has proven particularly successful in my classroom.

4. Sending a list of healthy food options for lunchboxes to parents. Parents hate to be preached at but often welcome tips and advice.

 

I am sure my wonderful readers can recommend other positive ways to get parents to include more healthy items in their kids’ lunchboxes. As a teacher and parent I would love to read them.

You Can’t Have Your Lunch and Eat it Too

Imagine ripping lunches away from students because after serving them they found that their parents haven’t yet settled the cafeteria bill. One second the children have their lunch tray, the next they have been confiscated and are ordered to take an orange instead.

The school now apologises for this, but sometimes a sorry isn’t good enough. Sometimes you have to reflect on what they were thinking to rationalise taking lunch from hungry children. Their actions caused embarrassment, made children go hungry, caused needless food wastage and made children responsible for an issue that had nothing to do with them.

Earlier this week, school officials threw out the lunches of up to 40 students at Uintah Elementary School because of unpaid balances on students’ meal accounts, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. After having their lunches discarded, the children were instead given milk and fruit.

According to the outlet, officials intended to withhold lunches from indebted students. However, because district employees did not learn who owed money until after lunch was served, they ended up taking back those lunches from students and throwing them out.

“So she took my lunch away and said, ‘Go get a milk,’” fifth-grader Sophia Isom told Utah outlet KSL-TV of what happened. “I came back and asked, ‘What’s going on?’ Then she handed me an orange. She said, ‘You don’t have any money in your account so you can’t get lunch.’”

Erica Lukes, Sophia’s mother, says she is outraged over the incident, and that she was previously under the impression that Sophia’s lunch balance had been paid.

“I think it’s despicable,” Lukes told The Salt Lake Tribune. “These are young children that shouldn’t be punished or humiliated for something the parents obviously need to clear up.”

On Wednesday, the district posted an apology on its Facebook page. The apology notes that officials are investigating “what type of notification parents may or may not have received prior to this week.”

The meek apology just proves that they completely missed the point.
