Redefining Gifted and Talented

If a school’s gifted and talented program goes no further than those who are gifted at calculations and essay writing they are limiting their scope dramatically. Creativity and the wonderfully imaginative and artistic ways children express themselves warrants some attention when it comes to devising gifted and talented groupings.

The child below may not be a writer or a human calculator but I defy you to argue that he isn’t gifted or talented:

Should High Schools Install Condom Vending Machines?

Whilst I would ideally wish that condom vending machines were not on school grounds, I can understand why there is a push for them. What I didn’t realise was just how bad the STD ‘epidemic’ was among teenagers:

One-third of Philadelphia’s high schools will be offering free condoms to students in a pilot effort to fight “an epidemic of sexually transmitted disease” in the city, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Students will return to 22 schools following the holiday break to see new clear plastic condom dispensers installed inside the nurse’s office, WTXF reports. While 12 schools in the city already offer condom in health resource centers, the new move aims to increase contraceptive access to students in a city where teens comprise 25 percent of new HIV infections.

The initiative has sparked outrage among a number of Philadelphia parents, who say free condoms will only serve to encourage teens to engage in sexual activity. But school officials point out that parents are able to sign a waiver to opt their child out of the program, and teens will have sex regardless of whether condoms are made easily available to them.

“The reality is: Many of our teenagers, regardless of what adults think, are engaged in sexual activities,” Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter told the Inquirer. “Discussion about whether or not they should be sexually active is an appropriate discussion, but if they are, then we need to make sure they’re engaged in safe sexual practices.”

Across the U.S., at least 418 public schools make condoms available to students, according to Advocates for Youth, a group dedicated to educate and assist young people in sexual health. Of those schools, more than half distribute condoms via school nurses or teachers, while just 3 percent use “vending machines.”

The dispenser program in Philadelphia comes after a new initiative in Springfield, Mass. made waves this year for making condoms available to both high school and middle school students, giving students as young as 12 free access to contraceptives at school.

New York City school officials also sparked controversy in September, when the Department of Education announced a plan to make Plan B emergency contraception available to high school girls at 13 schools across the city. Under the program, an effort to curb the city’s teen pregnancy and abortion rate, girls as young as 14 are able to get the morning after pill without parental consent.

New York’s pilot initiative was launched as an addendum to an existing program that distributes free condoms to students.

The Children Must Be Safe Because Their Teacher is Carrying a Gun

Teachers who think that bringing a loaded gun to school protects their students have rocks in their head. After the shocking events of last week our children to be reassured not bodyguarded. They need to feel that school is a safe place.

When a teacher decides to bring a gun to school they are encouraging already anxious kids to become more worried and insecure. Our children need to be sheltered from guns, not see them as a normal everyday imperative for ones own security.

I detest the idea of putting guns in the hands of the very people instituted to be our children’s role models.

The teacher who decided to bring a gun to school may have thought she was protecting her students, but are our students so much safer in such an environment?:

Fear over the Newtown school shooting prompted a Minnesota teacher to bring a loaded gun to school last week, forcing a school lockdown. The unnamed teacher, a female in her 50s, has been placed on administrative leave from Seward Montessori School in Minneapolis.

“This is the first case like this I’ve ever heard of,” Minneapolis police Sgt. Bill Palmer told KMSP. “In this day in age in this week, handguns in schools are of great concern to everyone.”

Acting on a tip from a staff member, the school principal alerted the school resource officer, who confiscated the gun from the teacher, in her 21st year of employment at the school. The loaded .357 Magnum handgun was in the educator’s locker in the teacher’s lounge, according to the Star Tribune. School officials confirm that no students or staff were harmed or injured.

While the teacher was not arrested, she could face misdemeanor charges for violating conditions of her Minnesota conceal carry permit, which prohibits firearms in schools without written permission from a principal or school official.

Parents were notified of the incident by phone.

Dying Teacher on Journey to Find Out if he Made a Difference

One of the most difficult parts of being a teacher is letting your students go at the end of the year. Often we feel that there was more to be achieved and that if we were given more time, we could have further strengthened the child’s self-esteem and classroom skills. We also wonder if the progress made during under our tutelage will be built on by future teachers. And most of all, when that child looks back at their formative years, will they remember us?

I can understand how important it is for a dying teacher to find out if all the time and devotion spent on teaching his pupils actually made a difference:

David Menasche has stage-four brain cancer and is losing his battle after three operations, chemotherapy and radiation, USA Today reports.

After a recent seizure led to brain swelling and decreased vision, the 40-year-old Miami high school teacher realised he couldn’t keep teaching but didn’t want to sit at home doing nothing.

He posted a message on Facebook in August asking if any former students had a place for him to stay, and within two days students in 50 cities had replied.

He has visited 50 former students in 12 cities so far and says he wants to know whether he has been a good teacher.

“I am at the end of my life,” Mr Menasche said.

“I don’t know how much longer I have left, and I just wanted that sense of satisfaction that the time I did have I used well.”

He said his cancer treatment had caused extensive memory loss and he hoped his students’ stories would also help him remember.

“I don’t remember my childhood at all,” he said.

“In fact, I don’t remember anything prior to roughly 16 or 17 years old.

“And even the things that I was doing as a teacher are somewhat spotty.”

Last week, he slept on the couch of former student and aspiring screenwriter Stephen Palahach.

Mr Palahach said as a teacher Mr Menasche had known all the bands he and his friends listened to and had pushed him to be open-minded about what he read.

“I’ve had great teachers in my life, but he was really present in the moment,” Mr Palahach said.

Mr Menasche taught nearly 3000 students while working as an English teacher for 15 years.

An online fundraising campaign is helping to pay for his trip and he hopes to write a book about interviews with his students.

An awful tragedy that is going to unsettle children.

Below are some tips by experts in the field I used for the Colorado shooting, but they are just as apt in this instance:

Watch for Trauma: “Young children may have difficulties identifying and expressing feelings. Parents should pay attention to the children’s play (for instance, preoccupation with certain aggressive electronic games, drawings, repetitive play that imitates the traumatic event or events). Another sign of trauma is avoidance of reminders.” — Dr. Aurelia Bizamcer, Medical Director, Outpatient Psychiatry at Temple University Hospital

Keep Answers Truthful but Simple: “We’re not holding back, but we’re not giving more because the giving more could have the risk of alarming the child. … As a parent you have an obligation to protect a young child from being overwhelmed.” –Alan Kazdin, Professor of Psychology and Child Psychiatry at Yale University; Director of the Yale Parenting Center.

Reassure Them: “We need to appreciate that kids have different fears. Many will worry about the movies, but others will worry about such events spilling over to other areas, such as the mall, school, the neighborhood. For kids of all ages, it is really important to let them know that these kinds of events are incredibly rare. ” –Dr. Gene Beresin, Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training, Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital

Keep Answers Age-Appropriate: “Parents should be sure to pitch the discussion to their kids’ developmental level. For a 6-year-old, it’s completely appropriate to reassure them of their safety, with some emphasis on the fact that this person is no longer at large. For kids over the age of 8, more concrete details are appropriate, along with, perhaps, a general discussion of how to be safe in public — locating exit doors for instance, and getting to safety in the event of any dangerous occurrence.” –Jay Reeve,President and Chief Executive Officer, Apalachee Center

Don’t Make Assumptions: “Don’t project your own feelings, fears and anxiety on kids because you know you don’t really know exactly what your kids are feeling until you talk to them.” –Dr. Jane Taylor, psychiatrist

Instead of Teaching a Baby to Read, Teach it to Smile

What is the rush? So your child reads when he/she is developmentally ready instead of when they’re a baby? So what?

Reading is not the greatest gift you can give a young baby. Love, optimism, hope and friendship are much more important to a baby’s development that the ability to read:

John Wilkey was just four days old when his mother Dana set about teaching him how to read. The fact that newborns can’t focus on anything more than a few inches away — let alone understand words in any form — did not deter her.

Dana, 39, an events organiser who lives in Chelsea, West London, is so passionate in her view that it’s never too early to make your child brilliant, she used to run through a set of ten flashcards with her son twice a day. ‘I would show John words like “milk”, give him my breast, and then show him the baby sign language for milk,’ she says. ‘I did it morning and evening.’

Baby sign language, for those not familiar with modern  parenting, is something ‘Tiger parents’ like Dana are well versed in. It works on the theory that children want to communicate long before they develop speech and can be taught little hand signals to communicate their needs and thoughts.

When he was nine months, Dana says John — her only child — was pointing and using basic baby sign language to show he could recognise up to 20 words and phrases, including ‘I love you’, ‘nose’, ‘ear’ and ‘arms-up’.

From there, Dana says his vocabulary grew at break-neck speed. A video of John at 20 months shows him sitting in his high-chair using a chubby finger to trace underneath the words ‘eyes’, ‘clap’ and ‘book’ from left to right.

Dana, who lived in the U.S. with John’s father before they separated, now lives with her fiance, Philip, in an £3.5 million London townhouse, once owned by a well-known footballer.

She is now one of a growing number of mothers convinced that getting children reading before they are potty-trained will help them get ahead in later life.

The internet has made the job of parents a great deal harder:

More than four in ten parents say that their children have been exposed to internet porn, an official survey reveals.

Almost a third say their sons or daughters have received sexually explicit emails or texts and a quarter say they have been bullied online or on their phones.

Many others have been exposed to websites promoting anorexia, self-harm and even suicide.

The frightening insight is contained in a round-up of responses to a Department for Education consultation on parental internet controls obtained by this paper.
