High School Coach Headbutts a Referee (Video)

Our sports stars may argue that they are not rolemodels but athletes, but our high school basketball coaches cannot mount such an argument. How they model behaviour during good times and bad, reacting to poor referee decisions as well as good ones, is crucial to nuturing fine young sportspeople with the right type of values.

The teacher in the above clip seems to have failed that test.

A high school basketball game in Pennsylvania took an ugly turn at the end as video appears to show one coach headbutting a referee with so much force it knocked the official to the ground.

Video of the game, between Pennsbury High School and Neshaminy High School, two schools outside of Philadelphia, was obtained by the blog, City of Basketball Love.

According to the report (via Deadspin), the incident came with less than 30 seconds left in the game when a Neshaminy player was called for a charge. Neshaminy head coach Jerry Devine argues the call with one ref when a second official comes up and appears to call a technical foul on Devine. That’s when things got ugly.

Connecting With Your Students is the Key to Teaching Them Effectively

January 5, 2016

There is a reason why acclaimed teacher Ron Clark continues to grab headlines teachers rarely get. It’s not just about his energy and passion (although that clearly helps) and it has very little to do with his standardized testing scores (although I’m sure they are really impressive).

It has to do with his ability to connect with his students by taking their interests and passions and giving them a pride of place in his teaching approach. By letting your students know that what is important to them is also important to you, it forces your students to think of you as different to the standard teacher who has seemed on a different wavelength and of a vastly different era. It makes them listen to you more and gives far greater scope for forging the connection necessary for the kind of progress teachers yearn for but often miss out on.

I advise all young teachers to share their passions and at least try and appreciate your students’. It may just be the catalyst for a successful year.

Girl’s Hilarious Attempt at Getting a Day Off School

January 4, 2016

girl-forged-letter

Telling lies and committing forgery wouldn’t usually be something to savour, but somehow I see a young creative genius primed for a life of creativity and ingenuity:

As the holiday season slowly comes to a close around the world, one little girl is determined to hold off on going back to school for as long as she can.

A social media user has shared the handy work of her little girl Cara, who handed her parents a letter ‘from the school’ that she ‘found in the letterbox’.

The amusing note was cleverly written in two different colours – black for the information and blue for her signature – and completed with a pink princess stamp to keep it looking as realistic as possible.

‘My daughter got the mail today (it’s Sunday), apparently they have another week off school,’ the mother wrote on Reddit

‘The school compnay is taking a brake so the kids will get one more week of school off and we will need your child to sign their name here [sic],’ the note read.

The letter then concluded with a line for a signature and a green arrow to keep it looking authentic.

Hungry Kids are Almost Unteachable

December 30, 2015

Try and learn a new or difficult concept on an empty stomach. It’s virtually impossible to be anywhere near your best when you’re hungry:

An increasing number of pupils in Scotland are going to school hungry and in some cases are stealing food from classmates, according to teachers.

Teaching union the EIS carried out a survey as part of its work on tackling the impact of poverty in schools.

About half (51%) of those questioned reported a rise in pupils coming to school without any food.

The survey also found an increase in those taking free school meals and attending breakfast clubs.

More than 300 primary and secondary teachers responded to the autumn survey by the country’s largest teaching union.

One in five (19%) identified an increase in the number of incidents of children asking for food and even stealing food from other pupils.

Teachers can Make a Real Difference!

December 28, 2015

Teaching can be one of the most rewarding professions. Our hard work and sensitivity can be just the tonic to turn potential into success. Just ask Jack Black:

Jack Black has revealed it was his teacher who helped him overcome the “crippling” stage fright he suffered in his youth.

And defeating his nerves while at a school for “troubled” children in Los Angeles set Jack on the path to become a successful performer.

The 46-year-old comedian told The Observer Magazine: “I once tried to overcome my stage fright at school by showing up to class really high.

“‘Maybe I’ll discover some new level of performance,’ I thought. However, I just became paranoid, and even more paralysed by fear.

“The moment I managed to beat some of my stage fright demons and thought, ‘This is really what I’m going to do with my life’, was in a school production of The Caucasian Chalk Circle when I was 17.”

Jack was playing the part of an anarchist judge called Azdak when he decided he could no longer do it. But his teacher Scott Weintraub asked him to go to breakfast with him first.

“I agreed and at the diner he told me I’d been brilliant in rehearsals, and no one was going to judge me,” Jack said.

“Something he said gave me the confidence to go ahead. All my terror disappeared, and the joy of performance came back to me.”

Jack added he still suffers from stage fright, especially during live televised events.

He said: “Even when every fibre of your body tells you, ‘This is wrong, this is terrifying, you’re horrible’, you can shut off that noise and just go out there. And good things can happen.”

Raise Your Hand if You Find Christmas Offensive

December 23, 2015

hello-kitty-tree

I am not a Christian and have never celebrated Christmas in any form, but I respect the tradition of the holiday and I acknowledge that public schools have embraced it for hundreds of years.

But the times they are changing.

What was acceptable for centuries is now deemed offensive. Christmas favours Christians and public schools have other denominations. These other denominations coped fine until now. Not any more:

Catherine Gordon had decorated her classroom with a festive tree for 30 years before the building principal demanded she take it down.

Gordon said she was saddened by the school’s decision to remove the pink Hello Kitty tree.

She added: “The tree had no religious symbols on it whatsoever. No crosses or angels – just pink Hello Kitties and my students really enjoyed it and it cheered me up during the day.”

The events at Bangor High School in Maine, USA, led local politician Bruce Poliquin to call the decision “baseless”.

He added “We should be able to wish our fellow citizens Merry Christmas.

“We should be able to wish people Happy Hanukkah or to offer a holiday greeting.

“Eliminating safe decorations from classrooms, something we all grew up with, is going too far.”

The Epidemic that is Teacher Bullying

December 21, 2015

Some will watch the teacher in the video above and think that he looks soft, weak and defeated. I think he handled the situation brilliantly.

Forget about classroom management gurus and 6 step strategies for classroom control, when a student decides that he detests you enough to blow cigar smoke in your face, there’s nothing you can do about it.

The kid in this video is likely to get in a world of trouble. But if I were the principal, I wouldn’t stop there. I would happily punish the entire class for their laughter and encouragement. Shame on them!

The Love a Child Has for Their Parents Cannot be Properly Measured

December 19, 2015

Children today are depicted as ungrateful and selfish, but are they really?

I would argue that there is a love, respect and gratitude that constantly goes unrecognised.

Take the clip above for example:

This time of year often focuses on what children put on their wish lists for Santa. But in a tearjerking video, a group of kids from low-income backgrounds show the power of giving during the holidays.

UPtv asked kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta what they wanted for Christmas, and they named gifts like Minecraft Legos, an Xbox 360, and a Barbie house. Then the kids were asked what their parents would want for Christmas, and they listed items like a coffeemaker, jewelry and a new TV.

Later, each child received the gifts he or she asked for, as well as the one suggested for the parents. But there was a catch: they had to choose which of the two gifts to keep.

Their responses were beautifully inspiring. “Legos don’t matter. Your family matters,” said one little boy. “They look out for me and do stuff for me, so I need to give back to them,” added another.

But, as the video shows, their gratitude was powerful.
