Teacher Claims he Didn’t Think Sex Abuse Was a Crime

June 18, 2014

marist brothers

I am just too disgusted to even comment:

The former superior of Lismore’s Marist Brothers community and deputy principal Trinity Catholic College the told the child abuse royal commission on Tuesday (June 17) he did not associate child sexual abuse with crime in the ’80s.

The commission is looking at how the Marist Brothers handled accusations against two men later jailed for multiple child sex abuse offences – brothers John Chute and Gregory Sutton.

Brother Anthony Hunt, who led the community to which multiple child abuser Gregory Sutton was attached, said he thought Sutton’s behavior was ‘innocent’.

Br Hunt admitted he had not reported Sutton to authorities despite repeated indications that his behaviour with children at a primary school was ‘inappropriate’.

He said he thought inappropriate behaviour was ‘excessive expressions of affection’ and had not heard the word pedophile.

Commissioner Justice Jennifer Coate asked him, ‘When you give that answer that, as the deputy principal of that Catholic college in the mid to late 80s in this nation, (were you saying) you did not understand that the sexual assault of children was a crime?’

Br Hunt: ‘I would have to say that’s correct at the time’.

The Classroom Incident that Isn’t Seen as Child Abuse but Actually Is

June 10, 2014

sticky

I’m sick of reading multiple stories every year about teachers who react to talkative students by taping up their mouths.

Whilst this is almost invariably dismissed as a passive act where the teacher is demonstrating an important lesson in a unorthodox manner, there is absolutely nothing passive about it. Actually, it is a very violent act! Taping up mouths is the stuff of kidnappers and bank robbers. There is nothing instructive or lighthearted about it.

I would go so far as to say that is akin to getting slapped on the face, but actually it is worse. Firstly, a slap on the face is over in a second whilst a child with their mouth taped shut usually has to wear it for a while. And secondly, nobody laughs when a child gets smacked, but chances are, the taping of a child’s mouth is likely to get at least mild snickers from some students. It amounts to c0mplete and utter humiliation.

And finally I would like my fellow colleagues to realise that a “loudmouth” should never be treated like a child out of control. Talkative children are not behavioral concerns, they are simply a reflection of how well developed and engaging your lesson is. Good teachers don’t crucify students that talk, they see it less as rebellion and more as feedback.

So when school governors choose to call an act of child abuse and an immediate sackable offense as just ‘misguided’ and allow that teacher to go on without any penalty at all, we must draw attention not only to the teacher but to those that can’t see the harm and humiliation involved in forcibly taping a poor child’s mouth shut.

A classroom ‘chatterbox’ had her mouth taped shut by a teacher to keep her quiet.

Elise Smith, 11, was made to sit with Sellotape over her lips for 15 minutes as a punishment for talking too much.

School governors criticised the teacher’s actions as ‘misguided’ – but no further disciplinary action was taken.

The teacher has since apologised to Elise and her parents but they want him removed from the school.

Angry father Marc Smith said: ‘The children were all talking in class and were told to be quiet, but my daughter kept on talking.

‘The teacher should just have sent her out. My daughter told me when I got home and the next morning I went to the school. I was fuming.’

At the time of the incident, former headteacher Mike McCandless received written statements from the teacher and other pupils at William Allitt School in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, which was recently placed in special measures following an Ofsted inspection report.

Mr Smith said he was dismayed that the teacher in question was never suspended.

He added: ‘The teacher apologised but he has not been punished enough, in my opinion, because he is still working at that school. I would not personally want him there.’

Jean Mead, chairman of governors, said: ‘This was a misguided action rather than a malicious one.

‘The teacher immediately regretted his actions and apologised.

‘We worked alongside the local authority to carry out a thorough investigation and appropriate action was taken.’

A Cautionary Tale for Frustrated Teachers

June 5, 2014

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmpMmNLXBFM

As this video shows, try to resist badmouthing your students and their parents, because one day you are likely to get caught … and it won’t be pretty:

One Elyria, Ohio, mother is extremely upset about the message she received recently from her son’s kindergarten teacher.

After the Crestwood Elementary School teacher left a standard message for mother Ashley Moore, the teacher apparently thought she had hung up the phone and began bad-mouthing Moore’s son while still on the line, according to Ohio outlet WOIO-TV. The teacher’s harsh opinion of the boy was recorded on Moore’s phone.

“He has no common sense,” the teacher — who has not been identified — said in the recording. “He was 7 in May, and he’s the biggest baby in my group. She still probably wipes his butt.”

Moore told The New York Daily News that the call was supposed to deal with her son’s educational progress. The boy reportedly has ADHD, autistic tendencies and gross motor skills issues.

Moore says she has enrolled her son in a new school. “He’s afraid,” she told WOIO. “He does not want to go back to her [the teacher].”

In response to the incident, the director of communications for Elyria City Schools released the following statement, per the Daily News:

Her actions certainly don’t represent the district’s philosophy or the partnerships we have with our parents. We know that individuals can become frustrated but there is no excuse for what occurred and the comments this teacher made.

Superintendent Paul Rigda also told the outlet: “This certainly isn’t how we expect our teachers to behave. … At the same time we understand that they are human. They do have their emotions and opinions and they can vent at the end of the year. I get it, but she crossed a line.”

Teacher Sought Dating Advice from Her Fourth Graders

May 23, 2014

cassandre fiering

Perhaps she should have asked for advice on how to conduct herself professionally instead:

A New York City teacher has been fired after asking for relationship advice about her two boyfriends from fourth graders, investigators say.

Substitute teacher Cassandre Fiering, 45, even had the students role-play conversations with her about how she should talk to the men, who were both in their 30s, according to the kids – who were ages nine and ten.

She allegedly told them that they were her ‘munchkins’ and invited them to dress up like ‘demons’ and scare one of her boyfriends and ‘toilet-paper’ his house.

The bizarre counseling session happened in June 2013 at Public School 189 in the Bronx, New York, DNA Info reports.

A report from the city Department of Education Special Commissioner of Investigation also alleged that she touched one student on the shoulder and touch two others on their thighs.

Ms Fiering says she was stuck with five fourth graders all day with no lesson plan. The rest of the class had gone on a field trip.

She was paid less than $155 for the day.

She disputed the findings of the report and promised to hire a lawyer to fight her firing.

‘The report is blatant lies,’ Ms Fiering, who also works as an actress, told the New York Daily News.

‘We were talking about relationships, it was all theoretical. It was an all-day situation and I was in the room for seven hours without a lesson plan.’

How is not being provided with lesson plans an excuse? I would love to meet a substitute teacher who has never been left without a lesson plan. I doubt they exist. When I was a substitute teacher I was rarely given work, or even an insight into what math skill or science topic they were covering. I don’t understand how you could survive as a substitute teacher without a folder full of per-prepared lessons and activities.

Cassandre Fiering, 45, was dating two men in their 30s and reportedly asked the class to help her choose which one to dump, according to a bizarre school board report quoted by the NY Post.

Investigators claim the substitute teacher, who also works as an actress, asked students aged 9 to 10 years old to dress up as “demons” to scare one of her younger lovers.

“Fiering said that one of the men she was dating was a mechanic and that she wanted the students to be her ‘munchkins’ and to go ‘toilet paper’ the boyfriend’s house,” the report reads.

They also claim she touched two of the students on the thigh and another on the shoulder.

Fiering told the NY Post the allegations were “blatant lies” and she conducted a classroom discussion about relationships before being fired last December.

Teacher Suspended for 10 Days for Grabbing a 6-Year-Old By the Neck (Video)

May 18, 2014

barb williams

How is this a fair and reasonable punishment for what this teacher did? What kind of deterrent is a 10 day holiday for this appalling behaviour? And I have to ask this question, if it were a male teacher that did this, would he have got off so lightly?

An Ohio kindergarten teacher has been suspended for ten days after surveillance video appeared to show her grabbing a six-year-old boy by his neck.

The boy’s parents, Anthony and Autumn Nelson, were shocked at the school’s response to the footage, which showed their son Ian being lifted off the ground by his shirt collar.

Teacher Barb Williams was put on unpaid leave, but the Nelsons are calling on her to be fired from the school district where she has taught for 14 years.

Williams is seen on surveillance footage appearing to confront Ian as he comes out of a bathroom at Riverdale School.

As the little boy walks out of the bathroom, Williams allegedly grabs him and lifts Ian in front of a wall.

The teacher then appears to grab him by the throat, tilting his head back and forcing him off his feet.

In another shot, Williams appears to have grabbed the boy’s shirt and used that to lift the terrified boy off the ground.

‘We thought it was just a little incident that happened. That’s what the school made it sound like. All of a sudden, we get this video today and this is just outrageous,’ Mr Nelson said.

The incident came to light when a member of staff at Riverdale Schools in Hancock County reported Wiliams.

Seeing the way their child, who was left bruised, had been treated has been upsetting for the Nelsons, who were given a copy of the footage by the school on May 7.

‘I just started crying. I burst out in tears. I called my mom. I called his mom,’ Mrs Nelson said.

She and her husband were shocked by the school’s reaction however, and are demanding that Williams be fired.

The unpaid suspension will end just as the school breaks up for the summer vacation.

Middle School Teacher Gives Student a Lap Dance

April 27, 2014

felicia

The following things make me very concerned by the completely outrageous actions by Middle School teacher, Felicia Smith:

1. How can a teacher, who is supposed to impart wisdom to her students, behave with such flagrant stupidity?

2. For a teacher to do this one wonders if she thought she could get away with it. Is it common for such behaviour to go unreported?

3. What an awful excuse this teacher provided for her inexcusable actions! Her students may have urged her on, but so what?

4. And if the lap dance wasn’t enough, she allowed this student to repeatedly slap her buttock. Not only does this contravene the basic rules for proper treatment of women, it also gives the signal that any of her other students can do the same to her whenever they see fit!

I just can’t get over this story:

A MIDDLE school teacher in the United States has admitted she gave one of her students a lap dance in front of the rest of his class.

Felicia Smith, 42, has been charged with engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a student, KHOU News reports.

According to a male student at the school in Houston, Texas, Ms Smith grabbed his journal and stopped him from talking to his friends as he walked into class. When the bell rang, Ms Smith placed a chair at the front of the room, and the boy’s classmates told him to sit on it.

Music started to play. Then Ms Smith gave the student a “full contact lap dance”, grinding against him and rubbing her hands all over his body. The teacher also got on her knees and placed her head between his legs, KHOU reports.

The boy says he “slapped Ms Smith on the buttocks” several times.

At the end of the dance, which apparently lasted about four minutes, Ms Smith hugged the student and said “I love you baby, happy birthday.”

When she was questioned by police, the teacher admitted to performing the lap dance, saying she did it at the urging of his classmates.

Investigators have reviewed video footage of the incident, which is being kept on file at the District Attorney’s office.

When an Apology is Not Nearly Enough

students

A teacher allegedly threatens to send a Jewish student to ‘one of your gas chambers‘ for skipping the lunch line and the teacher’s punishment is no more than an apology!

One of Britain’s top public schools is the subject of scandal Sunday, after it was revealed that a teacher threatened to send a Jewish student to ‘one of your gas chambers’ for skipping the lunch line.

The student, a seventeen year-old girl at the highly prestigious North London Collegiate School, later received an apology from the teacher in private over the remark, according to the Daily Mail.

The school has refused to identify the offending teacher, however, or what – if any – disciplinary action had been taken over the remark. The girl’s parents urged the headmistress on Saturday night to make a public statement against the anti-Semitic incident.

“A teacher was passing by and she rushed up to my daughter and said, ‘Don’t do that or I’ll have to send you to the back of the queue or to one of your gas chambers’,” the girl’s father told the Daily Mail.

He added that several students overhead the remarks. “It was very unpleasant, very uncalled-for and very unfortunate. My daughter was shocked and upset. She didn’t say anything to the teacher at the time but all her friends expressed amazement. They kept saying, ‘Did she really say that?'”

Another student has reported the incident to the Community Security Trust, an organization which combats anti-Semitism in Britain. The organization stated that they are working with teachers and parents to resolve the issue.

North London Collegiate School is an exclusive all-girls’ school; according to deputy head Alex Wilson, between 20-25% of students are Jewish.

The girl’s father noted that anti-Semitism has not been a problem before, nor since in the three months since the incident.

“The school doesn’t deserve to be in the middle of a race issue. It is normally a model of correctness in these things,” he said. “But there should be an element of visibility so people see the teacher has been disciplined. My wife and  I would also like the school to make a public statement that there has been an incident and [the remark] was totally unacceptable.”

Meanwhile, the school’s administration has remained ambiguous about what actually happened.

“North London Collegiate School is proud of its rich, multi-cultural history and celebrates equality and diversity within the school community,” it said in a statement.

“The school was recently made aware of an allegation of an offensive statement made by a member of staff. The school promptly commenced an investigation. Having reached a determination and sought specialist legal advice, appropriate action was taken.”

By letting a teacher go virtually without punishment for a racist remark we are telling impressionable children that this kind of behaviour is a somewhat minor infringement at worst.

The Type of Teacher We Should be Glad to See Punished

March 30, 2014

Marylou Addona

As much a I don’t like the practice of filming a teacher in class, sometimes the footage proves extremely useful in getting rid of destructive and incompetent teachers,

Here is a possible case in point:

A Connecticut teacher is on leave and under investigation after she was allegedly caught on tape threatening and belittling one of her eighth grade students.

“I’m going to punch him right in the face and break that glass in his eye,” Marylou Addona was allegedly caught on a recording saying, according to the school district.

WFSB-TV reported that the exchange was recorded on a student’s iPod. The Duggan Elementary School teacher was reportedly unaware she was being recorded.

“I can’t stand the crybaby,” Addona allegedly said.

The recording captured another alleged conversation the teacher had with a student.

“I heard you had an attitude today too. Is that true? What’s your name anyway,” Addona allegedly said.

“Blake,” the student replied.

“Blake. What kind of name is Blake? Irish, Italian, French, what are you? White? You think you’re cool with that name Blake, huh,” Addona allegedly answered.

While the district is using the recordings as part of their investigation, the mother of the student who made them told WFSB-TV that her son is now being retaliated against from school officials. She told the local news station that she is documenting everything and will file a report of it continues.

Remember When they Argued that the Schoolgirl was in Love With Jeremy Forrest?

March 9, 2014

forrest

I said it from the beginning and it has turned out to be the case – the schoolgirl that ran off with her teacher to France was not in a healthy relationship. Not only did I maintain that a teacher who is involved in a sexual relationship with their student deserves prison time, but that those that defended it on the grounds that this was “true love” would soon see their theory unravel.

That’s why I am not surprised that the schoolgirl has a. found another partner and b. found another teacher:

The teenage schoolgirl who was abducted to France by her teacher has begun a relationship with another teacher, it has emerged.

The girl sparked an international search in 2012 when, aged 15, she fled to France with Jeremy Forrest, a maths teacher at Bishop Bell school in East Sussex.

Forrest, 31, was jailed for five-and-a-half years for child abduction and five charges of sexual activity with a child at Lewes Crown Court in June.

The teenager, who is now 16 and cannot be named for legal reasons, is now “ridiculously happy” in a relationship with a 20-year old teaching assistant, the Sun on Sunday reported.

Her mother told the newspaper: “He is really nice and we have welcomed him into the family and I am very happy for my daughter. We would now appreciate that they are left alone.”

The man is reportedly a PE assistant who lives in a different town and has no connection with the girl’s school, so there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing. The man also works part-time in security. The girl posted a photograph on the internet of the two together and has exchanged publicly-visible messages with him.

The girl had previously told newspapers she wanted to marry Forrest when he was released from prison. However, she was banned from visiting him in jail because of his child sex conviction.

She also claimed she had instigated the relationship with the maths teacher and that it had been her suggestion to run away together to Bordeaux after their relationship was uncovered.

Primary School Teacher Catches Herself in the Act (Video)

I always appreciate it when a school community comes to the defense of a disgraced teacher.

It is important for us to understand that good teachers often make bad mistakes, just like good stockbrokers and company executives do. But bad mistakes in every sphere often leads to a termination of contract, no matter how much that person was regarded or liked.

Here, we have a odd case of a teacher filming herself taunting an autistic child who is stuck in a chair. This would have to be one of the most bizarre ways of getting caught being completely unprofessional:

A PRIMARY school teacher who used her mobile phone to record a 10-year-old boy with Asperger’s syndrome as he struggled to free himself from a chair may be fired.

Nicole McVey, who teaches the fifth grade at Oaktree Elementary School in Goodrich, Michigan, is heard mocking the youngster, asking him, “Wanna be tasered?”

Even the school principal Michael Ellis gets in on the act, telling the child: “It’s not really an emergency in their book,” after Ms McVey states that maintenance is on the way.

According to the New York Daily News, Ms McVey then emailed the incriminating video to school colleagues — presumably thinking they would find it funny — who forwarded it to school administrators.

Mr Ellis has since resigned and there are now calls for Ms McVey to be sacked. But the teacher still has the support of some parents and the incident has divided the local community.

“You hear of bullying by other students and other kids in class … but I have never had a case with teachers and administrators bullying,” the boy’s family lawyer, Patrick Greenfelder, told the New York Daily News.

Mr Greenfelder also revealed the family may take civil action against the school.

Goodrich School Board Superintendent Scott Bogner told ABC 12 that an investigation into the incident was under way.
