Why I Won’t Be Celebrating Facebook’s 10th Anniversary

Facebook has proven not only an extraordinarily popular success but also an enduring one. In the ten years the social medium has been in circulation Facebook have become only stronger rather than a passing fad that one could be forgiven for assuming they would be.

But for all the good that Facebook offers, let’s not forget about the negative aspects.

1. Cyberbullying – Facebook has become the place for cyberbullies to insult and intimidate their victims. Even though Facebook claims to be vigilant when it comes to bullying, time and time again we have seen evidence to the contrary.

2. Privacy and Stalking – Unfortunately,  we constantly warn children about using the privacy settings because there are sick people out there who can potentially exploit them through their Facebook page. Nothing is private anymore.

3. Self-Esteem – Studies have shown that Facebook makes people feel worse about themselves.

4. Trivialising the concept of “Friends” – The meaning of the word “friend” has been greatly devalued thanks to Facebook.

5. Too Easy for Young Kids to Access – It might say you have to be 13 but a startling number of under aged children have their own Facebook page.

Is Tiger Mom a Racist?

Whether Amy Chua dubbed the “Tiger Mom” is a racist is not the point. Rather we should be talking about how skewed her thinking is.

Ms. Chua continues to measure success by academic scores, college degrees and careers. This is a very dangerous opinion because it says to all those with only decent grades and moderate salaries that they are not successful. Perhaps even that they are failures.

This is of course rubbish!

We should not be defined by our test scores or our take home pay but on what caliber person we are. Are we happy, generous and selfless? Do we possess integrity and do we try our best? Do we make time for family and friends?

Instead of listing cultures and religions that she thinks achieves what is an unrealistic and superficial version of success, she should be trying to pitch a positive message to her readers. Not everyone can be a Mormon or an Asian or Nigerian. But everyone can contribute to the world in a profoundly positive way. Forget trying to emulate cultures and religions, and instead, try to be your best self!

If we follow the Tiger Mom’s model for success we start to label. We look down at cashiers, house painters, taxi drivers and hairdressers.  We start putting more pressure on our kids to get into prominent colleges rather than concentrating on influencing them to be kind and give charity. In short, we become snobs!

Is Tiger Mom a racist? Personally, I don’t care.

One thing I do suspect though – I suspect she isn’t the success she thinks she is.

Student Shot by Teacher Protests His Sacking

I might be crazy, but I have a lot more time for a teacher that thinks big and gets it horribly wrong than one who turns to textbooks and worksheets for inspiration. Bringing a pellet gun to school in the name of physics is an accident waiting to happen, and you can understand why the authorities didn’t appreciate its appearance (nor the subsequent accidental shooting of a student). But, boy that could have been a brilliant lesson!

I commend the student for forgiving his teacher and for flying the flag for a teacher that made a terrible mistake in the name of engaging his class:

A high school senior in the UK who was injured by his physics teacher in an experiment mishap has launched a campaign to have the man reinstated after he was sacked.

Richard West was suspended then sacked when a pellet he fired in a physics experiment rebounded off a chair and struck one of his students in the leg.

But victim Ben Barlow has since set up a Facebook fan page and an online petition for his favourite teacher to get his job back, writing “You’d do more damage with a safety pin”.

“Mr West set up an experiment where he was going to shoot through paper into cardboard boxes at the end of the room to work out the speed of the object and its deceleration,” the 17-year-old student wrote.

The incident occurred in November but last week Mr West lost his job.

Now the “Bring Back Westy” fan page is approaching 3000 likes and dozens of students leaving comments of praise and calling for their teacher’s return.

School principal Adrian Richards told the UK’s Metro it would be inappropriate to comment on the matter as it was “still in the appeal phase of the process”.

The Education Version of Groundhog Day (Updated)

In the classic 1993 Bill Murray film Groundhog Day, Murray was forced to relive the same day over and over again until he learned from his mistakes.  Whilst only a light-hearted comedy on the surface, Groundhog Day was a timely reminder that mistakes and its consequences are repeated over and over again until they are learned from.

Every time the curriculum changes I think of Groundhog Day.  I’ve only been a teacher for a short time, yet already I have seen the curriculum change 4 times.  First it was the CSF, then it became the CSF 2, followed soon after by VELS. And the curriculum has recently been changed yet again!

And this time it’s a National Curriculum – and it stinks!

Why do they do it to us?  Just when you get used to one curriculum, they change it from another.

The cynic in me says the Government is bereft of ideas.  They know that education outcomes are underwhelming, that there isn’t much satisfaction in the quality of schools and performance indicators are not painting a rosy picture.  Yet, they don’t have a clue what to do about it.  They neither have the money, vision or gumption to make any real change, so they go for the obvious alternative – perceived change.

When asked to reflect on their achievements in Education, the former Government proudly pointed to overhauling the curriculum.  They triumphantly declared that by introducing a national curriculum, they were able to do what previous administrations couldn’t.

But they will know the truth all along – you can’t change the fortunes of an ailing academic record by altering and renaming a curriculum.  In fact, from my experience you can’t expect any change at all. Unless it is change for the negative.

Even if my cynical take is wrong, and there is some good intention behind this new curriculum, it doesn’t seem to be adding anything of substance.  A bit more grammar, a deeper focus on handwriting and a greater emphasis on history sounds good.  But when it comes down to it, it is just like my boss said both this time and last time and the time before that, “Don’t worry. It is going to be very similar to our current curriculum.”

The same mistakes over and over again …

6 Year Old Suspended for 4 Days Because of Cheese in his Lunchbox

Lunchbox laws cause friction between schools and parents and achieve a great deal less than intended. I am all for healthy eating, but the answer is not to suspend a 6 year old for what is in his lunchbox.

Ultimately, as much as educators want to feel they can change the world in all instances, the job of parenting should rest solely with … parents. It is not the business for schools to suspend children for cheddar cheese bags.

There are far better methods for dealing with unhealthy lunches than dictatorial rules. These include:

1. Having a quiet word to parent offenders.

2. Complimenting children with healthy lunches.

3. Having a fruit and vegetable party in the classroom to celebrate a class achievement. This has proven particularly successful in my classroom.

4. Sending a list of healthy food options for lunchboxes to parents. Parents hate to be preached at but often welcome tips and advice.

 

I am sure my wonderful readers can recommend other positive ways to get parents to include more healthy items in their kids’ lunchboxes. As a teacher and parent I would love to read them.

You Can’t Have Your Lunch and Eat it Too

Imagine ripping lunches away from students because after serving them they found that their parents haven’t yet settled the cafeteria bill. One second the children have their lunch tray, the next they have been confiscated and are ordered to take an orange instead.

The school now apologises for this, but sometimes a sorry isn’t good enough. Sometimes you have to reflect on what they were thinking to rationalise taking lunch from hungry children. Their actions caused embarrassment, made children go hungry, caused needless food wastage and made children responsible for an issue that had nothing to do with them.

Earlier this week, school officials threw out the lunches of up to 40 students at Uintah Elementary School because of unpaid balances on students’ meal accounts, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. After having their lunches discarded, the children were instead given milk and fruit.

According to the outlet, officials intended to withhold lunches from indebted students. However, because district employees did not learn who owed money until after lunch was served, they ended up taking back those lunches from students and throwing them out.

“So she took my lunch away and said, ‘Go get a milk,’” fifth-grader Sophia Isom told Utah outlet KSL-TV of what happened. “I came back and asked, ‘What’s going on?’ Then she handed me an orange. She said, ‘You don’t have any money in your account so you can’t get lunch.’”

Erica Lukes, Sophia’s mother, says she is outraged over the incident, and that she was previously under the impression that Sophia’s lunch balance had been paid.

“I think it’s despicable,” Lukes told The Salt Lake Tribune. “These are young children that shouldn’t be punished or humiliated for something the parents obviously need to clear up.”

On Wednesday, the district posted an apology on its Facebook page. The apology notes that officials are investigating “what type of notification parents may or may not have received prior to this week.”

The meek apology just proves that they completely missed the point.

Reflections from a Year as a Stay-at-Home Dad

One year down and another to go as a stay-at-home father. It’s been a year of surprises, bonding, ups and downs. As much as I love it, I must say, that I miss teaching more and more each day.

My children are 8 and almost 2. I have always been a very hands on father and have regularly adjusted my hours so that my wife can finish her qualifications. But taking a whole year off is a different kettle of fish.

Reflecting on my experiences so far, I have the following to report:

 

1. I still have absolutely no idea how to fold a fitted sheet.

2. Why are there so many awful picture books for babies? Can’t they even try to make them amusing or imaginative?

3. Since when did going to the butcher shop count as an outing? I find myself buying stuff from the supermarket just as an excuse to leave the house.

4, Every success I have ever achieved pales into insignificance compared to the feeling of ecstasy I get from performing the monumental task of resettling a crying baby.

5. Two thirds of my day is spent crouching under a high chair picking up recycled food bits.

6. Young kids go through more daily clothes changes than a model at her wedding reception.

7. I love how young children point out the simple things we take for granted. “Hey Daddy, look there’s a flower.”

8. First word, first steps, first catch … it doesn’t get any better than that!

9. If the original question is what came first the chicken or the egg, the very next question was, “Why should I put the toys back in the bucket if it’s going to be tipped over as soon as I am done?”

10. When an online recipe says quick and simple it often means long and tasteless. Cooking for fussy children is tougher than building a skyscraper.

The Most Common Questions Teachers Are Asked at Job Interviews

I stumbled on a brilliant article in the Guardian where Head Teachers share the questions they regularly ask at job interviews and the rationale behind their questions.

I hope this article comes in handy next time you interview for a new teaching position:

If I walked into your classroom during an outstanding lesson, what would I see and hear?

“I’d like to hear about: animated discussions, students clearly making progress as evidenced in oral and written contributions. High quality visual displays of students’ work showing progress. High levels of engagement. Behaviour that supports learning.”

“After hearing a candidate’s response I try to get them to talk about their experiences in the classroom. I try to get a sense of the impact that they have had on pupils’ achievement.”

• Why do we teach x in schools?

“This question really throws people. If it is maths or English they sometimes look back at you as if you are mad. They assume it is obvious – a very dangerous assumption – and then completely fail to justify the subject’s existence.

“Whatever the subject, I expect to hear things like: to improve skills and independent learning; to encourage team work; to gain a qualification; for enjoyment (very important, rarely mentioned); to enhance other subjects; to develop literacy, numeracy and ICT skills; to improve career prospects; self discipline; memory development; to encourage life-long learning in that subject. The list goes on…”

“This is one of my favourite questions (it’s based on a question my National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) coach used to ask me) because it gets candidates to think about their contribution to the school organisation and their team spirit. If I’m interviewing for a senior leader I would follow this up with: what would you want them to say about you in three years time? This way I can get a sense of where they want to develop as leaders.”

• Evaluate your lesson

“Teaching a one-off lesson in an unfamiliar school with students you have never met before is a difficult task, but a useful one for candidates and those making the appointment. The evaluation of the lesson by the candidate is crucial. I need to see someone who can be self-critical but who also recognises when things go well. Someone who makes suggestions as to how the lesson may have gone better, what they would do differently with hindsight. I like to hear them talk of the individual student’s progress in the lesson, and how they would follow it up. Remembering pupils’ names is always impressive. I’d rather see an ambitious lesson that goes a bit awry than a safe boring one.”

Earlier today I posted a very comical answer to the famous light bulb joke. I recommend you read it, as it is extremely funny and perceptive.

Part 2 is devoted to the actual answer. How many teachers does it take to change a light bulb?

None of course. We are not allowed to:

A REFRIGERATOR lightbulb retailing for about $3 at a hardware store ended up costing a far north Queensland state school almost $500 after Queensland’s Public Works Department sent an electrician to install it in a teacher’s government-owned home.

Doomadgee State School, on the Gulf of Carpentaria, was billed $200 for labour alone after the teacher was told workplace health and safety regulations prevented any staff member from buying and replacing the bulb themselves, The Australian understands.

Don’t even get me started!

The Most Over-Crowded Classroom in the World (Photo)

Give up?

It’s in London, England:

Given the high temperatures and humidity in the city over the last few weeks, parents with children at Sinempulelelo Primary School are very concerned at the cramped conditions under which their children are expected to learn.

Parents and some of the teachers at the school said there were 221 pupils in the Grade R class.

A mother of two, Nosimamkele Heshu, said her children had yet to start learning because there were too many of them to be taught by the single Grade R teacher.

“There used to be three Grade R classrooms, but this year there is only one classroom allocated to Grade R pupils. We want to know where the other two classes are.

“It is not fair that our children are squashed in there all morning,” she said.

“This is the only primary school in the area, so it is only natural that we send our children here,” she added.

Heshu said their children were expected to start Grade 1 next year but she was worried about their progress.

“Children usually know how to write their names by the time they get to Grade 1. What are the chances of these children knowing how to do that when their learning conditions are not conducive,” she asked.

The Daily Dispatch arrived at the school yesterday unannounced after receiving a tip-off about the conditions.

The weather in East London reached a maximum of 31°C and, on arrival at the school, the team found more than 200 children seated on the floor of the prefabricated structure.

In the sweltering heat, children in full school uniform were squashed against one another and expected to listen to the teacher.

At noon when school ends for Grade R, the sweat-drenched youngsters were allowed to leave, to be met by parents outside the classroom.

A teacher, who identified herself only as Miss Ntsabo, ordered the Daily Dispatch team to leave the school premises because they were not invited by “the head of the institution”.
