It is Shameful to Claim that Paedophilia is NOT a Crime

March 17, 2013

Newly elected Pope Francis is given a yellow Catholic faith bracelet following a meeting at the Vatican

This comment does no good for the Catholic institution and the cardinal should be in the very least disciplined for his misguided comments:

A South African cardinal who helped elect Pope Francis has described paedophilia as a psychological illness and not ‘a criminal condition’.

The Catholic Archbishop of Durban, Wilfrid Fox Napier, told BBC Radio 5 live that people who were abused as children and became paedophiles were not criminally responsible for their actions in the same way as somebody ‘who chooses to do something like that’.

Cardinal Napier, who was among the 115 cardinals in the conclave at the Vatican that elected Pope Francis earlier this week, called paedophilia a ‘psychological disorder.

And just three days into the new role, the pope and the Catholic Church are now faced with fresh child abuse controversy after the cardinal’s remarks.

He said: ‘What do you do with disorders? You have got to try and put them right.

‘If I as a normal being choose to break the law knowing that I am breaking the law, then I think I need to be punished…

‘From my experience paedophilia is actually an illness, it is not a criminal condition, it is an illness.’

The cardinal spoke of two priests he knew who were abused as children and went on to become paedophiles.

He told the BBC: ‘Don’t tell me that those people are criminally responsible like somebody who chooses to do something like that.

Torturing Children Is Not a “Learning Experience”

March 13, 2013

william

I believe that any parent that tortures their children, yet manages to escape a jail sentence can consider themselves very fortunate:

A father has admitted waterboarding four children – including his two sons – after claiming it was a learning experience for them.

William Province, 42, pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child and was given two years’ probation.

Province from Jefferson County, Montana, carried out the torture, which simulates drowning, on his nine and 12-year-old sons and two other children aged 13 and 15, according to court documents filed by prosecutors.

His girlfriend at the time said he broke her wrist and some fingers on December 5 when she tried to stop him from punishing the children, court records said.

She said Province straddled each boy with his hands over the child’s face and mouth and dumped water on their faces to simulate drowning.

The woman told investigators that the man described it as a learning experience for the boys.

Waterboarding is an extreme form of torture which can result in oxygen deprivation to the brain and lungs.

Prosecutors dropped felony charges that included making threats against public officials and others.

In keeping with the plea agreement, District Judge James B. Wheelis sentenced the man to 180 days in jail for each charge, all suspended.

That amounts to two years of probation, minus the 80 days he has already spent in custody, the Independent Record reported.

Prosecutors said in court records that a witness had reported that the man had body armor, assault rifles and armor-piercing ammunition.

The Pitch By a Famous Boy Band to Encourage Children to Get Tattoos

March 11, 2013

Last time I checked it was highly illegal for children to get tattoos (even with parental permission). Putting aside the fact that I detest tattoos, surely this is not a respectful way to treat your devoted fan base:

ONE DIRECTION have been forced to delete a tweet and a Facebook status which asked fans to send in a video of themselves with a “1D tattoo” for a chance to appear in their new movie.

The boy band – whose members range in age from 18 to 20 – sent the message to their 13 million fans on Facebook and 10 million fans on Twitter calling for video proof of the inking.

But critics were quick to accuse One Direction of encouraging fans – who are largely made up of 10 to 16 year-olds well under the legal tattooing age of 18  – into getting permanent body art.

“Have a real 1D tattoo?” they wrote on the social networking sites, “Show us! Submit a 90 second YouTube video to 1d3dfan@gmail.com and show us why you should be in the 1D3D movie! 1DHQ x.”

The social media messages were deleted shortly after a backlash, but the band’s spokesperson Simon Jones claimed the tweet was a mistake.

“This tweet was posted in error and has now been removed,” he said, “One Direction do not want to encourage any of their fans to get 1D tattoos.”

The tweet and Facebook status was replaced by a similar request today giving fans the same opportunity to appear in their movie, but this time by submitting a YouTube video of their “1D Collection”.

“Who has the biggest 1D Collection? Submit a 90sec YouTube video to 1d3dfan@gmail.com – show us why you should be in the @1D3Dmovie! 1DHQ x” they wrote on Facebook and Twitter.

How Giving Your Children a Bath Can Get You on a Sex Offender Registry

March 10, 2013

bath

If the police were given universal access to the photo albums of my parents’ generation, there would be millions of people in their 60’s and 70’s suddenly added to the sex offender registry. Since when did innocent bath photos constitute a sexual offense? If naked documentation of children was automatically considered material for Child Protection Services, then video of a birth must be classified as ‘kiddy porn’ (unless the baby somehow arrives fully clothed).

The problem with this case and others like it, is it completely undermines the function of a child offender registry. To have known pedophiles share a registry with loving parents is absolutely outrageous and completely unacceptable:

An Arizona couple is suing US department store Walmart after they were falsely accused of taking pornographic photos of their three daughters.

lost custody of their children for a month and say they spent more than $75,000 in legal fees as a result of the ordeal, ABC News reports.

It all started in 2008 when the Demarees took some holiday photos into their local Walmart to get developed.

A Walmart employee raised concerns with the store manager about several bath time photos the couple had taken of their daughters – then aged five, four and 18 months.

Instead of getting their happy snaps, the couple were reported to police and their children placed in the custody of the Arizona Child Protective Services Agency.

A medical exam of the girls showed no signs of sexual abuse and a month later a judge ruled the photos were innocent and not child pornography.

The Demarees regained custody of their children but in the meantime had to endure their name being listed on a registry of sex offenders.

Mrs Demaree was also suspended from her job at a local school for a year while the investigation was underway.

“We’ve missed a year of our children’s lives as far as memories go,” Mrs Demaree told ABC News.

“As crazy as it may seem, what you may think are the most beautiful innocent pictures of your children may be seen as something completely different and completely perverted.”

In 2009, the couple sued Walmart for not telling them that they could turn over photos to authorities without their knowledge.

They lost the hearing after a judge ruled that employees in Arizona could not be held liable for reporting suspected child pornography.

But the couple is now appealing the case.

On a March 6 hearing, the family’s lawyer argued that Walmart committed fraud by not disclosing to customers that employees would look at their photographs.

It was also negligent for “untrained clerks” to be given the authority to make assumptions about the content of the pictures and report them to police, the lawyer claimed.

Walmart has argued that under Arizona law employees who report child abuse without malice, such as in this case, are immune from prosecution.

The appeals court is yet to reach a verdict on the case.

Letter Written by an 11-Year-Old UK Girl Desperate to Avoid Genital Mutilation

March 6, 2013

FGM

The following is a heartbreaking letter written by an 11-year-old who is deeply afraid that she will be dealt the same awful fate as her elder sister:

Dear Madam
My name is XXX and I am 11 years old. I and my mum, sisters and brother came to England in 2005 when I had just turned 6 years old to join my dad who was at University. We come from Gambia in West Africa.

Three weeks ago we were watching a TV programme on African culture and as they were showing girls having their privates cut, my older sister who is 12 years old started crying. After 2 days she told my dad that she also had her private cut.

Mum and Dad never knew about it and she was told if she ever tells anyone the sprits will come and kill her immediately. She said it was done one weekend by my aunties at my nans house. Last Friday mum took her to our GP to have her checked and the doctor said it was done to her.

This morning when I went to school I told one of my teachers about it and together we went on the computer and found your group. The teacher asked me to write to you and ask for your help. I don’t want my private cut by anyone.

My dad loves us very much and he did not like what they done to my sister and he is very confussed. We should be going back to Gambia any time after Eid and he is worried and upset that they would do the same to me. I don’t what that too.

If you reply to this letter I will showe my dad and I am shore that he would be very glad to have your help. He is my best friend and if he knows what to do he would do it, he would not want anything to hurt us – I know that.

Please madam help me, and my dad. If you reply soon he would definately contact you if you can help. I really hope you can help me, not to have my private cut. I am reallye confused expessically seeing my dad so un-happy and not knowing what to do.

Thank you very much for reading my letter.

In my opinion, the very worst crimes are crimes committed agains6t children. I believe that genital mutilation is torture against children. To read that 24,000 children in the UK are at risk of having it performing against them is horrific! Anyone caught being a party to such a practice should be imprisoned for the same amount of time as a pedophile.

rape

How despicable is this for a t-shirt?

A company is selling t-shirts with the slogan ‘Keep Calm And Rape Them’ emblazoned across the chest on Amazon.

The online clothing store, Solid Gold Bomb, sells the short-sleeved t-shirts for between £15 and £17 on the warehouse website.

But potential customers are clearly not willing to buy the deeply offensive t-shirts, slamming both Amazon and the clothes shop, which has its headquarters in the UK.

Users branded the shop and its message ‘disgusting’ and ‘disturbing’.

The brightly-coloured tops’ message are a twist on the ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ morale-boosting slogan used in World War II by the British Government.

The message has experienced a boom in popularity in recent years, and sparked a trend in shops producing products such as tea-towels, posters and cushions, bearing the slogan, or a play on it.

Solid Gold Bomb, who produce the t-shirts, was created and launched from Melbourne, Australia, and describes itself as a ‘small global t-shirt company’.

They write on their website about their range: ‘We managed to list our Keep Calm and Carry On parody series on the site.

‘Bake On, Beat On and Teach On are Proving Very Popular! Rock On!’

Primary Children Caught Playing ‘The Raping Game’

February 17, 2013

stan

When we used to play it, we called it ‘tag’:

Primary school children have been banned from playing a new break time game they called ‘the raping game’.

The playground activity had been named after a violent video game which depicts violent sexual assaults on a mother and two daughters.

More than a dozen boys, some as young as nine, were caught playing the ‘the raping game’ at Stanford Junior School in Brighton, East Sussex.

The school confirmed it had been taking place and headteacher Gina Hutchins said she had spoken to children about the vile name. It has now been called ‘the survival game’ following the head’s intervention.

Mrs Hutchins said: ‘As soon as we found out that this inappropriate word was being used, we spoke to the children concerned and they now no longer use it.’

The game has been played mainly by boys in Year 5 at the school for the past two to three weeks.

It involves one person being ‘on’ who has to catch others until only one is left uncaught and that person is the winner.

About 13 boys, aged nine and ten, played the game in the school playground but have since changed the title.

One concerned parent said: ‘I was horrified that my son had learnt that word.

‘He is only nine. Thankfully he did not know what it meant but it was that horrible thought he might use it elsewhere.

‘Most people assume children learn these words at home.’

The parent added she did not blame the school saying it is almost impossible to stop children bringing words into the playground.

They commended the headteacher for her swift actions in taking decisive action and stamping out the use of the word.

It is unsure what video game led to the naming of the game, but several on the market contain scenes of rape.

One game called Rapelay sees the main character try to rape a mother and two daughters.

Need School Security? Call in Steven Seagal!

February 10, 2013

I wish I could say this is just an idea for a cheesy Hollywood comedy. Unfortunately, I can’t:

Action film star Steven Seagal, who racks up big body counts in his on-screen battles with bad guys, took on a new role on Saturday, training posse volunteers for controversial Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio in how to use guns to protect schools in shooting incidents.

Arpaio, who styles himself as “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” enlisted Seagal to train his Maricopa County posse members at a school in Fountain Hills, a suburb northeast of Phoenix, with children used as stand-ins for scared students.

Seagal, a burly martial arts expert turned actor, guided 48 volunteers through various aspects of responding to a shooting, including room-to-room searches, and critiqued their work.

“I am here to try to teach the posse firearms and martial arts to try to help them learn how to respond quicker and help protect our children,” Seagal said.

Arpaio, whose tough stances on crime and illegal immigration have made him a national figure, has dispatched the volunteer posse to patrol schools in response to the shooting rampage that killed 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut school in December.

Those killings touched off a renewed debate over gun violence in the United States. President Barack Obama proposed a sweeping package of gun-control measures, including a ban on assault weapons.

The National Rifle Association, which opposes the gun-control proposal, has advocated placing armed security guards in schools.

Arpaio’s volunteers, some trained and qualified to carry the same guns as deputies, can intervene if there is an imminent threat to life. To add realism to the training event, guns firing non-lethal rounds that leave a color mark were used.

“It’s important to help protect our children and our schools and we need to do that with whatever means we have,” said Rick Velotta, a posse member and retired General Electric manager who attended the training.

About a dozen people protested the event.

“No gun should ever be in a school,” said protester Cynthia Wharton, a Fountain Hills resident.

Arpaio’s 3,450-strong posse of unpaid men and women has for years helped the sheriff target drunken drivers and illegal immigrants, and chase down fathers who are behind on child support.

Last year, Arpaio sent posse members to Hawaii to investigate the authenticity of Obama’s birth certificate at the request of local Tea Party activists, a key Arpaio constituency.

A sometime resident of the Phoenix Valley and member of Arpaio’s posse, Seagal, 60, starred in big-budget films in the 1980s and early 1990s, earning a reputation as an action star in movies like “Above the Law” and “Under Siege.”

He more recently played a corrupt Mexican drug lord in the 2010 film “Machete.”

Seagal also has been sworn in as a sheriff’s deputy in a Texas county along the border with Mexico and appeared in a reality TV show detailing his work as a reserve deputy in New Orleans.

Instead of training school security posses, it would be nice to see a school trying to change its culture, become more inclusive and make its student population feel appreciated for who they are and what they have to offer.

Children as Young as 5 are Self Harming

February 5, 2013

Concept of a young injured girl being a victim of child abuse

We have a huge self-esteem crisis facing our young and unless we stop picking on how they express their emotions rather than the feelings that brought them on we are going to see more self-harm and greater incidents of depression, anxiety, obesity and suicide:

Children as young as five are harming themselves, in a worrying epidemic that is sweeping the country, ChildLine has warned.

The charity says that it is no longer just teenagers who are self harming, but they are also receiving calls from five-year-olds.

The charity says that it has also seen a surge in the number of girls aged 10 to 14 self-harming and recorded a 30 per cent rise in boys who are deliberately hurting themselves.

Chris Leaman of charity Young-Minds, told The Daily Mirror that in some parts of the UK the number of young people self-harming had reached ‘almost epidemic’ proportions.

Research has suggested that self-harm is most common among 15 to 19-year-olds, and those suffering from anxiety and depression, according to the NHS.

Price Middle School Shooting Proves that Awareness is Not Enough

February 1, 2013

price

I am afraid all the awareness in the world will not be enough to protect America’s school children. This new shooting is bound to veer towards insane suggestions like arming teachers, when much more is required:

Police responded to a shooting at Price Middle School in Atlanta early Thursday afternoon, WSBTV reports.

Authorities say that multiple people, including a 14-year-old, were wounded, according to Fox News.

Police said the teen was shot in the back of the neck and immediately transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment, 11Alive reports. The victim was reportedly awake and responsive while being transported to the hospital.

The second victim — a teacher — received medical attention for minor cuts and bruises. The teacher may have been trampled during the chaotic scene, WXIA reports.

One person is in custody, according to CBS Atlanta. Atlanta Police spokesperson Carlos Campos told WXIA that the suspect was tentatively identified as a student. The shooting reportedly occurred outside the building.

The school was placed on lockdown, along with an elementary school and high school in the area. Parents were initially asked not to come to the school to avoid additional confusion, but students are expected to be released at the normal dismissal time of 3:45 p.m.
