Facebook Great at Weeding Bad Teachers

As much as I have warned teachers about what they choose to discuss on Facebook, I suppose it does a good job of bringing racist teachers to the light of day:

A teacher has been “relieved of her teaching duties” after posting a racist Facebook rant in response to recent events at a McKinney, Texas, pool party, according to a statement from Frenship Independent School District.

Karen Fitzgibbons was a fourth-grade teacher a Bennett Elementary school of Frenship ISD in Wolfforth, Texas. On Tuesday, she posted an article to her page about Eric Casebolt, a police officer who recently resigned after being involved in a racially charged incident last Friday. Casebolt, who is white, was caught on tape throwing a black, bikini-clad teenage girl to the ground when responding to reports of a disturbance at a community pool. He also pointed his gun at other youths.

This makes me ANGRY!” reads the post from Fitzgibbons, referring to Casebolt’s resignation, according to Texas outlet the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. “This officer should not have to resign. I’m going to just go ahead and say it…the blacks are the ones causing the problems and this ‘racial tension.’ I guess that’s what happens when you flunk out of school and have no education.”

The post continues, “I’m sure their parents are just as guilty for not knowing what their kids were doing; or knew it and didn’t care. I’m almost to the point of wanting them all segregated on one side of town so they can hurt each other and leave the innocent people alone. Maybe the 50s and 60s were really on to something. Now, let the bashing of my true and honest opinion begin….GO! #imnotracist #imsickofthemcausingtrouble #itwasatagedcommunity.”

Teacher Demonstrates the Importance of Life by Eating a Live Hamster

May 20, 2015

I am not sure you can get any positive message out of barbarism:

A teacher decided to give his pupils an extracirrcular lesson recently, by allegedly eating a live hamster in front of them.

Police are investigating the teacher, identified only as Yu, who reportedly gave the little rodent his grisly end to show the pupils in his South Korean classroom ‘how dear life is’.

The class he was teaching at a boarding school in Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province were reportedly teasing hamsters, causing him to take the drastic (and, let’s be honest, over the top) method of teaching them a lesson.

Yu is also accused of using abusive language in front of the seven children who claim to have witnessed the gruesome act.

He has since left the school following complaints from several parents and other members of staff.

Some parents have filed a complaint with the police, claiming that Yu’s actions were a form of child abuse.

How a Teacher Shouldn’t Stop a Fight (Video)

May 19, 2015

As discussed before, it is very hard to stop a student fight effectively. On one hand you cannot pin the arms of an aggressive student and on the other you can’t allow a fight to continue without making every effort to put a stop to it.

However, one doesn’t need to be an expert to work out that this isn’t the right way of going about it:

This video shows the shocking moment that a schoolteacher took off his belt and started whipping a group of pupils to stop them fighting.

In the brutal footage, which was posted on LiveLeak, a group of children can be heard screaming as the teacher rushes over and starts to whip the boys with his belt.

And as nervous pupils rush out of the way, one can be seen peering at the camera with a terrified look on her face.

60 shades of grey-classroom

I am all for expanding the cinematic horizons for my students, but 50 Shades of Grey? Really?

A US high school teacher could face disciplinary action after allowing her students to watch Fifty Shades of Grey in class.

The teacher, who claims not to have known about the sexual nature of the film, let her Hampshire County students choose a movie to watch as a reward for their hard work.

The screening was interrupted after ten minutes when the assistant principal walked past the classroom and recognised the film.

The principal, Jeff Woofter, said school policy prohibited students from watching any sexual movies in class.

“I will say it was an extreme lack of judgement from an otherwise very capable teacher,” Mr Woofter said.

“The teacher didn’t do a background check on the movie or even ask about it.”

It Only Took 49 Complaints For This Teacher to Get the Boot

April 27, 2015

It’s a bad look when it takes this long for a teacher who is seemingly unfit for the classroom is finally dismissed:

A teacher who allegedly let students play knife games, and failed to supervise a student who set fire to a book in class has been barred from teaching.

The food technology teacher was also accused of asking a student, “do you have your period” when she asked to use the bathroom.

George Steele worked at Mill Park Secondary College for three terms in 2013 and was the subject of 49 formal complaints during that time.

The litany of complaints was detailed in a decision handed down by the Victorian Institute of Teaching, who found that Mr Steele had engaged in misconduct and cancelled his registration as of March 11.

The former chef allegedly told a female student that “girls need to clean up after the boys”.

Another student said he told her to “drink a cup of concrete and harden up” when she asked for some help on a recipe.

Students also complained that the teacher ate all the food they made in the cooking class.

It was alleged that Mr Steele pulled a baseball hat over his head and nodded off on a train while he was meant to be supervising students on an excursion. He was also accused of losing a student’s work, storing beer in a fridge in the classroom, and letting Year 12 food technology students watch Border Security. He allegedly posted a photo on the school’s staff portal of a student in his class “playfully” threatening another student with a knife.

One teacher described his teaching style as “disorganised” and “haphazard”.

In an email provided to the hearing, one teacher spoke of how she smelt smoke in the corridor and asked Mr Steele if anything was on fire. “Seconds later, he came into the prep room and confirmed that student 1 set a student’s workbook on fire.” It was also alleged that he let students play a knife game in class “where they used a fork to stab between their fingers as quickly as possible”.

The school acted within a few weeks of Mr Steele commencing his job, and tried to provide support to improve his teaching practices. The Department of Education terminated Mr Steele’s employment after an unsatisfactory probationary period at the end of term 3, 2013.

The school’s principal gave evidence at the hearings, and said the teacher made “disparaging remarks about the school being run by ‘power crazed women’.”

Mr Steele did not attend the formal hearing, but provided written evidence to the merit protection board and responded to the principal’s complaints. He denied sleeping on the train and said he had a stress headache made worse by sunlight, which is why he pulled his cap over his eyes. The teacher denied posting the photos of students playing with the knives and said students had occasionally used his computer for various reasons.

He said he would not have asked a girl if she had her period and encouraged students to become independent learners. The sacked teacher said he was being punished for not implementing the school’s rigid teaching model focused on explicit instruction, “spoon feeding” and rote learning.

But the VIT disciplinary panel said Mr Steele was “simply unable to provide a safe and supportive environment, either physically or psychologically, for effective learning to occur”.

How Does a Teacher Stop an Out of Control Classroom Fight

April 20, 2015

The parent in question is justified in complaining about her son’s teacher, based on his seemingly excessive approach to stopping a classroom fight. But she should also reflect on the reason for such a scene, namely, her son’s involvement in the fight.

Additionally, the question has to be asked, what on earth is a teacher supposed to do when two students, or groups of students are engaging in violent activity in the classroom? Calling for help is the obvious answer, but in many cases the damage would have been done before the help arrives.

A concerned parent in the US has handed disturbing footage of a teacher putting her son in a choke hold to the police in a bid to have the teacher punished.

The Memphis high school teacher is seen completely immobilising the student on the ground after trying to break up a fight between the 16-year-old and another boy.

Students try to separate the pair but the teacher persists until he wrestles the boy to the ground.

The boy’s mum Shunkita Qualls said her son came home with bruises but school officials had initially played down the classroom.

But Ms Qualls was shocked when she saw video of the attack and believes the teacher was too heavy handed.

“(It was) heartbreaking. It brought tears to my eyes,” Qualls told FOX13.

“No mother wants to send their child to school and have to see something like that.”

The school released a statement saying it had reviewed the footage but believes the teacher’s actions were necessary to prevent the student attacking others.

Police are investigating but no charges have been laid.

Teachers Who Have Sex With Students Deserve Jail Time!

April 12, 2015

No jail time and not even put on the sex offender list.

A female teacher gets nothing more than a 90 day mental health treatment for bedding a 16 year old student. How is this an acceptable sentence? No wonder she is posting celebratory selfies of herself.

This isn’t just a victory for her, but all the other potential transgressors out there. With punishments like those, what’s to stop others doing the same?

And I’m sorry to repeat this again, but what if the teacher was a male? Would the sentence be so lenient? It’s interesting that the stigma falls almost exclusively on male teachers, but there are more female teachers than ever crossing the line.

I am appalled at the way the courts seem almost disinterested in cases like these. We must put pressure on judges to treat cases like this one far more seriously:

A teacher in the United States has come under fire for posting a ‘celebratory selfie’ after being given a light sentence for sleeping with a student.

Shelley Dufresnein, from Louisiana, was arrested last September after admitting to an improper relationship with a 16-year-old boy.

The 32-year-old was charged with several offences including carnal knowledge with a juvenile, indecent behavior with a juvenile and contributing to the delinquency of a child.

She accepted a plea deal in court on Thursday that means she will avoid jail time and will not be put on the registered sex offender’s list.

In exchange, the mother-of-three will have to undergo a 90-day mental health treatment.

She has also been banned from teaching and going near the victim or his family.

Several hours after she was released, Dufresnein uploaded a photo to her Instagram account celebrating her ‘victory.’

She captioned the photo: “My mood today,” followed by three smiley faces.

Many of Dufresnien’s followers congratulated her.

Drama is Taught Very Differently Than It Used To

March 25, 2015

drama

So much for the traditional theatre sports and method classes:

Drama students were shocked when their teacher showed them an erotic video where she stimulated masturbation with a tampon, writhed around naked and urinated.

In the X-rated video she also blew a condom out of her vagina and inserted a knife handle between her legs.

The unexpected screening was held by performance artist and PhD student Lauren Barri Holstein as part of an introduction presentation to her ‘Theatre and its Others’ module at Queen Mary University, London.

Ms Holstein is described as the ‘darling of the alternative performance scene’ and the footage was filmed during her recent production of the show Splat!.

Blushing freshers also got to see the part of the video where their teacher gyrated around mid-air whilst dangling naked from a harness suspended from the ceiling.

In another scene where she pretends to masturbate with a tampon, she does so over another woman, and sprays fake blood onto her face.

One drama student told student publication The Tab: “It was surreal.

“I honestly didn’t know how to react.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to look her in the eye in person, it’s just weird.”

Teachers Who Bully Students Make Me Sick

February 15, 2015

I hate seeing children bullied, especially by their teachers:

A bullied student frequently picked on by students was victimized by the one person expected to help him in those situations – his teacher.

Stephen Davis, 15, a freshman at Streamwood High School in Illinois, watched in horror as a cartoon-like sketch with buck teeth, hairy ears, bloodshot eyes, tentacles, a scar and a runny nose was labeled as ‘Stephen’s ugly ass’ by a substitute teacher, who did this in front of his entire math class.

Davis, who weighs 330 pounds, recorded the entire incident on his phone, leaving no doubt as to what the teacher did.

‘I was literally livid and embarrassed,’ he told the Daily Herald in an interview.

‘Everyone was standing there pointing at me, laughing, (while) I’m on the verge of tears.’

CBS Chicago also reports that Stephen is a special needs student.

50-shades-of-grey-word-find

The crazy howlers some schools make just mystifies me:

Parents in a US school district are turning 50 shades of red over word search puzzles given to middle school students based on an erotic novel and movie.

The students in Monessen, Pennsylvania, were given puzzles based on “Fifty Shades of Grey” that contained terms including “spanking” “submissive”, “leather cuffs” and “bondage”. Other words on the list were more explicit.

Parent James Carter complained about it at Tuesday night’s school board meeting, saying he tried to question the school’s principal and dean of students, but they refused to talk when he insisted on recording their conversation.

“I wanted to record the conversation because a lot of parents had questions about it, and I was denied that,” Carter told the board.

Monessen district officials said at the meeting that they couldn’t discuss the issue because they just learned about it Monday. Superintendent Leanne Spazak said the circumstances of the puzzle are under investigation.

One school board member who didn’t attend the meeting told WTAE-TV that the puzzle was a big mistake.

“It was a huge but unintentional error and collected from the five students involved as soon as it was realized,” Roberta Bergstedt wrote in an email. “Unfortunately one copy was taken by a student who then posted it on social media.”

The best-selling book-turned-film by E L James is in cinemas this week about is about a college student and her affair with a 27-year-old billionaire with a penchant for bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism.
