7 Reasons Why Reading Aloud To Your Kids Applies to All Ages

May 26, 2013

1. It’s time spent together. Reading time is time when you’re focusing on no one else and nothing else but them. It’s impossible to read to your kid and look at your smartphone or watch TV at the same time. I read to each of my children separately before bed. This lets me spend quality time with them individually. It makes for a longer bedtime ritual, but I don’t care because I love it.

2. It’s a conversation starter. Books always give us a reason to talk with each other, even if we don’t feel like we have anything to talk about. It keeps communication open.

3. It’s a great way to talk about emotional health. We talk about the things that happen in the stories, how we would feel if they happened to us, and how we might deal with such events the same or differently. Books have helped me broach topics that I might not have thought to raise if it weren’t for the subject matter in the story.

4. It’s a great way to honor the individuality in your children. I read different things to my daughter than I do to my son. We go to the bookstore and they pick out books about topics about which they are interested. Through paying attention to what they want to read, I can learn more about what their likes and dislikes are, including what they might want to be when they grow up.

20 Reassuring Things Every Parent Should Hear

May 20, 2013

beth

Courtesy of writer and humorist Beth Woolsey:

1. You are a hero for your kids. You are. You’re a go-the-distance, fight-the-dragon, face-the-challenges hero for your kids. Taking a beating makes that more true. Not less.

2. We all struggle. Every parent. Everywhere. We all second-guess ourselves. And we all want to quit sometimes. Hold the good times close, and when things are tough, remember, “this, too, shall pass.”

3. Finding the funny may not save your soul, but it will save your sanity. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Either way, look for the humor and embrace the crazy. Laughter is a lifeline.

4. Every day, you will feel like you have mishandled something. Like you’ve been impatient. Like you’ve misjudged. Like you’ve been too harsh. Like you’ve been too lenient. You may be right. Apologize if you need to and then, whatever. Seriously. Just whatever. Let it go.

5. The crazy, the crying, the cuddles. The screaming, the sacred, the scared. The minutes, the magic, the mess. It’s all part of it. And it’s all worth it.

Children Just Love to Laugh. It’s Up to Us to Help Out!

May 19, 2013

This clip of a father sending his quadruplet babies into fits of laughter reminded me how healthy it is for children to laugh. Although teachers are traditionally warned not to do anything that may compromise their authority, making your students laugh is a wonderful thing for building a healthy and positive classroom environment.

Nobody Should Love Their Phone THAT Much!

May 14, 2013

galaxyEverything seems to be pitched at impressionable kids nowadays. Films have become less sophisticated, television near juvenile and marketers are seeing the exploitation of children as their gold mine.

Today I saw the above advertisement whilst going shopping, and it struck me how deceitful and pathetic its message is. Obviously pitched at impressionable people without a large quantity of “real companions”, Samsung is telling prospective consumers that their product will be your friend for life. There are plenty of children out there who are extremely lonely that will identify with the notion that technology is their only friend.

Unfortunately, to make matters worse, the advertisement wants us to link the universal aspiration of living a happy and fulfilling life to selecting the right Smartphone. It is saying:

‘To all you lonely, disaffected and unhappy people out there, buy this and you will have friends and a rich and rewarding life.’

The challenge of making friends and enjoying life is extremely crucial to young people and for it to be used against them in the name of selling a product is rather sad.

I know that’s the way the world works, but I don’t have to like it!

Hilarious Video of Kids Tasting Foods for the First Time

May 12, 2013

This great video reminded me of some of the classic expressions my children have when trying a new dinner recipe:

A heartwarming and hilarious video has captured the brutal honesty of children’s first encounters with new foods, showing their reactions in slow motion.

Made by Saatchi & Saatchi, the two and a half minute homage entitled The First Taste was inspired when a creative director at the company’s Australian branch watched his own daughter try a gherkin.

The video focuses on seven toddlers and infants as they try sophisticated foods such as pickled onions, olives, anchovies and Vegemite.

10 Important Steps to Stop Yelling at Kids

May 7, 2013

yell

As much as it is largely ineffective and unprofessional we have all yelled at our students at one time or another. It can be extremely hard to remain calm when students become unruly and uncooperative.

Although intended for parents, this list by Laura Markham, Ph.D. provides sound strategies for maintaining composure around children:

Why Are There So Many Children Exposed to Prescription Drugs?

May 6, 2013

rit

It is my ardent belief that there are far too many children on ADHD medication. Whilst I am clearly no expert, it bothers me when children are prescribed Ritalin and the like, when other factors such as diet, learning difficulties and personal issues have not been properly looked at.

It also bothers me that the amount of children taking prescription medication seems to be escalating markedly. Even the experts are starting to raise doubts about the over prescribing that seems to be taking place.

I sincerely don’t want to end up with the kind of numbers being reported in the US:

One-in-four U.S. teens has misused or abused a prescription drug at least once — a 33 percent increase in the past five years, experts say.

A survey by The Partnership at Drugfree.org and MetLife Foundation also found 1-in-8 U.S. teens reported taking the stimulants Ritalin or Adderall not prescribed for them at least once.

Tips For Parents of Kids Who “Hate School”

May 5, 2013

hate

There can be nothing more dispiriting for a parent than to be faced with challenges concerning their children that they can’t intervene in or correct. What do you do if they tell you they hate school? You can’t always change schools. How do you make the school experience palatable for your children when you have no control whatsoever over the day-to-day running of their school?

The following are a list of tips courtesy of parentsconnect.com:

Mother Forced Her 14-Year-Old Daughter to Inseminate Herself with Donated Sperm

April 29, 2013

Ordeal: The girl apparently miscarried at 14 but regularly inseminated herself with sperm bought online by her mother and later had a baby at 16 (posed by model)

What a horrendous story! I can’t believe the sentence was so small for such an awful act:

A 14-year-old adopted girl was forced by her mother to inseminate herself with donor sperm to provide her with a baby, it was revealed today.

The ‘domineering’ woman had been stopped from adopting any more children when she forced her virgin daughter to carry out the procedure.

The girl is believed to have miscarried at 14 – but regularly used the sperm bought online by her mother and later gave birth when she was 16.

A formerly-secret court judgement revealed the details which have sparked fears over rules governing the buying of sex cells, reported the Guardian.

The mother, who had already adopted three children as babies from other countries, was sentenced to five years in jail after admitting child cruelty.

The divorced woman had decided against giving birth herself because she had a health condition and was sterilised, reported the Guardian.

However when she failed in her attempts to adopt a fourth child, the mother tried to force her adopted daughter to have a baby for her.

The insemination was planned when the girl was aged just 13 and the daughter ‘became pregnant at her mother’s request’, the judgement said.

When the newborn arrived, midwives were shocked by the ‘pushy and insensitive’ mother who tried to stop her daughter breastfeeding.

She told her daughter: ‘We don’t want any of that attachment thing’ – and even tried to take the baby, before child protection officers were called.

The court heard the local authority was told four times of fears about the mother’s behaviour but found no cause from concern on each occasions.

The siblings were home-schooled and their adoptive father did not know where they lived and had not seen them for a decade, reported the Guardian.

The mother put the girl through a ‘degrading’ and ‘humiliating’ ordeal, making her inseminate herself seven times over two years in her bedroom.

She also was forced to use painful acidic douches and eat a special diet – because her mother said this would make her more likely to have a girl.
