Some Teachers Never Change … Literally!

As a teacher who once accidentally posed for an official school photo with some ketchup parading on my top lip, I love the story of the gym teacher who wore the same clothes for 40 consecutive yearbook photos:

A gym teacher is retiring after a 40-year career – and taking his trademark yearbook outfit with him.

Dale Irby, 63, accidentally wore the same clothes – a brown v-neck sweater and groovy white patterned shirt- for the school yearbook photo in both 1973 and 1974.

When his wife Cathy, also a teacher, dared him to wear the outfit for the third-year running at Prestonwood Elementary in Texas, Mr Irby accepted the challenge – and ran with it.

Each time his picture was taken during his 40-year career, he reached for his old favorite threads.

He told the Dallas Morning News: ‘I was so embarrassed when I got the school pictures back that second year and realized I had worn the very same thing as the first year… After five pictures, it was like: ”Why stop?”’

He said that he wore the outfit because he had been instructed to smarten up instead of wearing his usual gym shorts for the school picture.

Support Teachers Before they Have a ‘Meltdown’

Teacher meltdowns are often ugly and they are toxic in a school environment. When they occur, inevitably, disciplinary action must be taken to ensure that the offense doesn’t happen again.

Whilst a teacher doesn’t have an excuse when they act unprofessionally, it is vital that more support and greater welfare provisions are available for what is a highly stressful and sometimes quite unforgiving occupation.

The teacher that wrote an intimidating message on the chalkboard of his classroom deserves to be severely punished for his inexcusable actions. However, with 28 years of service, I only wish he would have been able to seek help instead of  feeling the need to vent in such a way:

A northwest Indiana teacher is the subject of a police probe over a threatening message he scrawled on the chalkboard of his classroom.

According to ABC Chicago, the teacher at Edison Junior-Senior High School in Lake Station, Ind., wrote the following message on his chalkboard following after he had a “meltdown” during his sixth-period personal finance class last week:

A.) You are idiots!!!!!!!!B.) The guns are loaded!!!

C.) Care to try me???????

Students took a photo of the message and the image was circulated on social media, prompting school administrators to take action. The teacher was told to leave the school last Friday morning while an investigation into the apparent threat is completed.

Both police and the Lake County prosecutor’s office are working on the matter, according to Fox Chicago, and charges may yet be filed against the teacher.

According to CBS Chicago, the school sent out a district-wide call to students’ parents assuring them that “your student was never in danger” and that “the staff member is currently not in school.”

The teacher, a 28-year veteran of the school, has never been disciplined before, according to ABC.

10- The teacher is always on their cell phone.
I have a new iPhone – today I’m locking it in my desk during class. Sure, I’m usually checking off my list or responding to a question for IT support at my school but my students don’t know that. A cell phone in my hand, whatever I’m doing, says that someone out of the room is more important than the people who are in my room. That is a lie. When I’m teaching, they are the most important thing in the room. Nothing should be between me and them.

9 – The teacher is always on the computer or not paying attention.
Multitasking is a lie. You shouldn’t be Facebooking, Tweeting, emailing, surfing, reading your PLN or anything during class – even during a test. You should be up and around in your classroom helping and TEACHING. They are paying you to teach, not hang out in a virtual teacher’s lounge. Teaching is work. You need to be part of  your class. When you sit down at your desk and disengage with your students, you suck the energy out of your classroom.

I knew a teacher who used to sew on her sewing machine during class. As soon as she started sewing, the class knew they were “free.” You are shocked at sewing but I see teachers doing this now with electronic devices. You are paid to be WITH and engaged with your students not doing something else.

8- The teacher is always losing his/her temper or is predictably dramatic.
I lose my temper 2-3 times a year – last year it was twice. Everyone knows it because it is rare. If you’re losing your temper a lot you need to figure out why and get help. You might be tired or under a  lot of stress, but you are the adult. There is no reason for you to have to raise your voice or constantly lose your temper. It isn’t good for you and it isn’t good for the students. Teachers who are bullies should be ashamed of themselves.

The predictably dramatic could be when you get soooooooo mad you jump on your desk. The kids are shocked the first time and get quiet. But then, they start plotting. You have sealed your doom.

7- The Teacher shares private student information publicly
NEVER call grades out loud – even for the top students. It is embarrassing. Don’t do it. It is a horrible thing when teachers do this. It is also horrible when you berate them in front of the class for ANYTHING. If you want to lose the respect of your class let them see you treat a classmate – even one they don’t like- with disrespect. This isn’t a contest and it isn’t a reality show. Handle private things privately. Period.

6 – The teacher talks without stopping for more than 10 minutes (especially if monotone.)
Do you realize that after 20 minutes they are asleep? Imagine the principal from Ferris Bueller’s day off. This sort of thing will kill the love of learning. Learn to listen for cues and watch for them. When quite a few kids start going to sleep DO SOMETHING. Vary your voice. Have them read. Ask a question. Extended lecture should be viewed as going through the motions of teaching for most students. Sleeping is not an option. I have made an exception when a child is getting over a loss or has something going on in their family but typically this is a no no for me.

5 – The Teacher only teaches with one method
Worksheets are so hard for many children. I have one child who really doesn’t learn a thing from them. When a teacher sticks to only one modality he/she will teach the children who learn through that modality and everyone else will be “bad students.” We can differentiate and we can use multiple modalities. Wanda the One Note Worksheet Wonder will kill the love of learning in a class of students who are auditory learners. Likewise if you only assess learning with tests, you’re missing the point and you’re probably also missing the learning that could happen.

4 – The teacher who only teaches “good” students and lets the “bad” students do their own thing.

Let me tell you something. A “good” student can learn alone in a room with a book and doesn’t need a teacher. A good teacher can make a good student into a great one. But a good teacher also works to reach every child.

I know of a child with a significant LD who is now one of the most successful thoracic surgeons I know. I now an incredibly gifted graphic designers who has some of the leading Fortune 100 companies knocking on her door but was made to feel like an idiot because she couldn’t diagram sentences in middle school. Good teachers work to reach and teach all children. If you only want to work with “good” students then I’m happy that you have such a great teaching environment but the reality of most of our classrooms is that we have some kids who could go either way. I teach only good students because I believe all of my students are great. I get what I believe and expect.

3 – The teacher who teaches the same every year without changing.
I know a math teacher who fought getting a new book because it would mean making out new tests and this person had been using the same tests for over 15 years. Some students don’t get a subject and need some extra help and assessment and others don’t. When I teach binary numbers, some years I can cover it in 2 days and others it takes 7. It depends on the students.

2- The Teacher whose words mean nothing.

Imagine the traffic policeman who just stood by the road, wagging his finger, and yelling at cars for speeding.

“Slow down …. now… now..”
“I said slow down.”

This officer would become a joke because there is no teeth in his actions. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Be consistent. But don’t lie to them. Don’t threaten with no follow through but if you’re threatening a lot, then why? Why should you count? Your word should be enough.

1- Hate your students
Why are you teaching if this is you? When you talk poorly about a student it does get back to your student eventually. I don’t respect teachers who I think have a vendetta against a particular student. I admit I’ve had 3 in my teaching career who were especially hard for me to love. But I had to adjust my own attitude and know that even if that child’s goal was to get me, that I was above it. I am an adult doing an important job and I will behave nobly. No one can take away my nobility but me.

Six Valuable Steps to Making Positive Changes in Your Teaching

1. Think about what needs to change before deciding on a change – I regularly lead workshops on campuses across the country and often worry that there are carts being placed before unseen horses. When I’m asked to present, I’m usually counseled that faculty attending will want techniques, new ideas, strategies that work, and pragmatic things they can do in the classroom. But that’s not where the change process should begin. It should start with a question, ‘What am I doing that isn’t promoting learning or very much learning?’ Or, ‘What am I doing that I’ve probably done the same way for too long?’ Once you see the horse, you can better pick out a cart to put behind it.

2. Lay the groundwork for the change – I regularly object to the “just do it” approach to instructional change, as if we all work in a Nike commercial. The motivation is admirable but every instructional situation is unique. Teachers are different, students are different and we don’t all teach the same content in the same kind of courses. Whatever a teacher does must be adapted so that it fits the peculiarities of the given instructional situation. Don’t just do it before having given careful thought to how the change will work with your content, your students, and when you use it.

3. Incorporate change systematically – Beyond adapting the change, teachers need to prepare for its implementation. This means considering when (or if) it fits with the content, what skills it requires and whether students have those skills. If they don’t, how could those skills be developed? It also means valuing the change process by giving it your full and focused attention so as to ensure the new approach has the best possible chance of succeeding.

4. Change a little before changing a lot – Too often faculty have “conversion experiences” about themselves as teachers. They go to a conference or read a book, get convinced that they could be doing so much better and decide to change all sorts of things at once. They envision a whole new course taught by an entirely different teacher. Unfortunately, that much change is often hard on students and equally difficult for teachers to sustain.

5. Determine in advance how you will know whether the change is a success – It’s too bad that assessment has come to carry so much negative baggage, because when it’s about a teacher trying something new and wanting to know if it works, assessment provides much needed of objectivity. If you determine beforehand what success is going to look like, then you are much less likely to be blinded by how much everybody liked it. In this giant review of the change literature I mentioned earlier, only 21% of the articles contained “strong evidence to support claims of success or failure.”

6. Have realistic expectations for success – No matter how innovative, creative and wonderful the new idea may be, it isn’t going to be perfect and it isn’t going to be the best learning experience possible for every student or the pinnacle of your teaching career. Everything we do in class has mixed results; any new approach will work really well for some students, in some classes, on some days. Know that going in, remind yourself regularly, and don’t let it discourage you from continuing to make positive changes.

Dying Teacher on Journey to Find Out if he Made a Difference

One of the most difficult parts of being a teacher is letting your students go at the end of the year. Often we feel that there was more to be achieved and that if we were given more time, we could have further strengthened the child’s self-esteem and classroom skills. We also wonder if the progress made during under our tutelage will be built on by future teachers. And most of all, when that child looks back at their formative years, will they remember us?

I can understand how important it is for a dying teacher to find out if all the time and devotion spent on teaching his pupils actually made a difference:

David Menasche has stage-four brain cancer and is losing his battle after three operations, chemotherapy and radiation, USA Today reports.

After a recent seizure led to brain swelling and decreased vision, the 40-year-old Miami high school teacher realised he couldn’t keep teaching but didn’t want to sit at home doing nothing.

He posted a message on Facebook in August asking if any former students had a place for him to stay, and within two days students in 50 cities had replied.

He has visited 50 former students in 12 cities so far and says he wants to know whether he has been a good teacher.

“I am at the end of my life,” Mr Menasche said.

“I don’t know how much longer I have left, and I just wanted that sense of satisfaction that the time I did have I used well.”

He said his cancer treatment had caused extensive memory loss and he hoped his students’ stories would also help him remember.

“I don’t remember my childhood at all,” he said.

“In fact, I don’t remember anything prior to roughly 16 or 17 years old.

“And even the things that I was doing as a teacher are somewhat spotty.”

Last week, he slept on the couch of former student and aspiring screenwriter Stephen Palahach.

Mr Palahach said as a teacher Mr Menasche had known all the bands he and his friends listened to and had pushed him to be open-minded about what he read.

“I’ve had great teachers in my life, but he was really present in the moment,” Mr Palahach said.

Mr Menasche taught nearly 3000 students while working as an English teacher for 15 years.

An online fundraising campaign is helping to pay for his trip and he hopes to write a book about interviews with his students.

Introducing the World’s Oldest Teacher

When I say that I am not intending to retire anytime soon, I am not quite referring to teaching until I’m 100:

It is official. St Aloysius’ College’s Father Geoffrey Schneider, who turns 100 on December 23, is the world’s oldest serving teacher.

The Australian representative for Guinness World Records Chris Sheedy ,who is a former Aloysius’ student (1980-88), presented the world record certificate at the school in Kirribilli.

Father Schneider featured on the front page of the Mosman Daily as Australia’s oldest teacher but this world record will give him global fame.

Eight hundred members of the school community including parents, past parents and students gathered at the college for a Celebration of a Century to honour Father Schneider’s life.

He grew up in Melbourne and came to live at the college in 1965. The children have nicknamed him Father Schnitzel and both a classroom and trophy are named in his honour.

He takes 15-minute religious instruction classes at the college and is chaplain of the junior school.

The Jesuit priest has no intention of retiring from his teaching career.

“I’ve been gifted with strengths,” Father Schneider said.

Of the fuss being made, Father Schneider said he “lets it all flow by” while he awaits his telegram from the queen for turning 100.

12 Tips for Managing Time in the Classroom

1. Keep students on task during activities: Use visual timers during class activities such as think-pair-shares, group work, timed individual assignments, etc. A visual timer is one that enables students to “see” time.

2. Save class time by using efficient note-taking practices: For example, rather than have students spend valuable class time copying notes that the teacher writes on an overhead projector, whiteboard, chalk board or LCD Screen, give students a copy of linear notes as well as a blank graphic organizer based on those notes. Rather than copy notes, students fill in the words of the graphic organizer. This not only saves tremendous class time, it presents the notes in a linear as well as graphic mode and still requires students to pay attention because they have to fill in the missing words.

3. Get students to class on time: Choose a ‘gripping’ novel, or a short educational game (Around the World, Vocabulary Hang Man, etc. One that would only take about five minutes to complete.). Every day, exactly as the bell rings, start reading or playing the game. Students will rush to class to avoid missing the ‘fun’.

4. Use song clips or cell phone ring tones as timers: Sort them by how long they take to play through and use them as auditory timers for the students. Whether it’s a transition or a non-reading activity (Avoid playing music while students are reading.) the music will cue students in to the ‘time’ and keep them hopping.

5. Keep lengthy group work activities on target:  When giving students a good chunk of time to work on a project, for example, twenty minutes; tell students that you will do a ‘check-in’ every 3 min and 22 seconds. (Or some other odd time) Why not five minutes? Because the brain likes novelty and they are more likely to pay attention to something like 3:22.  Then set your visual timer for that amount of time. When the time’s up, stop the action and do a “check-in” with each group.  This should only take a minute or two. Have students whip around the room with a quick report.  This allows you to zero in on the students that are struggling to get started and stay abreast of the students who are barreling ahead and may finish early.

6. Get through your lesson plan with minimal distraction:  Summarize what must be accomplished in a period of time in a bulleted list. Try to keep it to four or five bullets. List the bullets on a flip chart pad or white/chalk board.  Draw check boxes next to each bullet.  As the class completes each bullet, ask a student to check off the completed item.  If the bullets are checked off before the end of the allotted time, students are rewarded with ‘talk time’, an educational game that they love to play, or another incentive. Say, “When we finish these bullets early, we have time to do something fun!”

7. Provide an environment that makes writing more efficient AND saves time: When assigning students a writing assignment, structure 10+ minutes (or more) for students to create a mind map of their ideas. When assigning students a project, structure time during class for students to create a plan. When students start projects with a ‘map’ of where they are going, the quality of their end product not only improves, they work more effectively and efficiently, thus saving time.

8. Give students clear directions so the need for repetition is minimized: Write your directions, assignments, sequences of activities, etc. on the chalk/white board or PowerPoint screen. Have one or two students paraphrase the instructions out loud for the class. Paraphrasing not only allows the teacher to determine how clear the directions are, but it provides the directions once again with a different voice.

9. Say it so all can hear it: If all students could hear what teachers said, or were listening, class activities would move along faster. If possible, use a wireless microphone and a speaker in your classroom.  Teachers who use such a system for ‘one’ student in the class who needs it as an accommodation report that they notice a marked difference in the class; all students hear and respond better. This step saves time because teachers repeat and re-teach less.

10. Allow students to contribute to managing THEIR class: Assign them jobs, or if appropriate, have them come up with a fair system of assigning jobs. Students can not only help with taking attendance, and collecting and passing papers; they can contribute to creating memory devices (mnemonics), songs for learning, vocabulary cartoons, flow charts and graphic organizers. Find out what strengths students bring to the class and use those strengths to differentiate lesson plans and learning materials.

11. Students who take time away from class must give time back: Restitution: When students caused the class to lose time because of poor behavior and disruption, I require them to make it up to the class. Students might have to prepare and present a 20 minute lesson, come after school to tutor another student for 7 minutes, work on the computer to create a crossword puzzle worksheet, etc. They must give back for what they took away.  This is not only an effective deterrent to wasted time; it can be a positive experience for the student and an opportunity for you to build rapport and relationship with the student.

The Science Experiment that was Always Going to go Wrong

Talk about a science experiment that didn’t turn out well:

A teacher on the New South Wales Central Coast has pleaded not guilty to assault charges, after he allegedly dared a group of students to hold dry ice with their bare hands.

Damien Hilton is facing eight charges, including cause grievous bodily harm by neglect, after a group of Terrigal High School students were injured during his science class earlier this year.

The 49-year-old, who was employed as a casual teacher, is accused of daring 10 children to hold dry ice for as long as they could.

The students were treated for burns, with two taken to hospital.

Hilton faced Gosford Local Court today and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The matter has been adjourned until next month.

Teacher Orders 20 Classmates to Beat Up Bully

It’s stories like this that cause me to rethink my idealism. I may believe that teachers sign up for the profession because of a desire to help all children reach their potential. However, when you read stories like this one, you wonder how on earth the teachers involved could have rationalised such a poorly thought out strategy. These are not the actions of proud and passionate teachers:

A Texas teacher will lose her job after ordering more than 20 kindergartners to line up and hit a classmate accused of being a bully, a district spokesman said Friday.

The teacher at a suburban San Antonio school is accused of orchestrating the slugfest after a younger teaching colleague went to her last month seeking suggestions on how to discipline the 6-year-old, according to a police report from the Judson Independent School District.

Both teachers at Salinas Elementary were placed on paid administrative leave, though the one who allegedly arranged the punishment will not work for the district next school year, said district spokesman Steve Linscomb. Prosecutors are reviewing the allegations and will determine whether formal charges will be filed in 30 to 60 days.

The police report alleges the teacher chose to show the child “why bullying is bad” by instructing his peers to “Hit him!” and “Hit him harder!” It also states that the second teacher intervened only after one of the children hit the boy hard on his upper back.

“Twenty-four of those kids hit him and he said that most of them hit him twice,” Amy Neely (pictured above), the mother of 6-year-old Aiden, told KENS-TV. She did not specify what injuries her son may have received.

Neely said her son is not a problem child and that this was the first she’d heard of teachers having issues with him. She said she wants to make sure the teacher who ordered the hitting does not work in a classroom again.

“She doesn’t need to be around any children,” Neely told the television station.

The mother added — and the police report confirmed — that some of Aiden’s classroom friends told him they didn’t want to hit the boy but did so because they were afraid not to.
