When I was a student teacher I was openly criticised in front of my class for calling myself an “idiot”. At the time I thought it was a bit harsh and the word is hardly a swear word, but I now accept it was very unprofessional of me. Whilst I have never used the F-word in class (I never use it at all), I am forgiving of a teacher who accidentally let it slip:
The dropping of the F-bomb by a Grade One teacher in front of the class has sparked an explosion of support for the teacher from hundreds of mums on a Queensland-based facebook page.
And Queensland Teachers’ Union deputy general secretary Kate Ruttiman says that while there have been cases of teachers cautioned for repeated use of the F-bomb, a one-off slip by an educator is simply “human” and they should not be punished.
The post on School Mum Facebook, which has 214,000 followers, said: “My grade one daughter came home from school a couple of days ago and told me her teacher said the naughty word After investigating further it turns out she was referring to the four letter F word. I was shocked, stunned and furious.”
But the majority of mums rushed to the support of the teacher with floods of posts like — “Let it go, she’s human after all, ”It shouldn’t require a punishment. It’s just a word.”
